THEA seeks Community Coordinator

Texas Health and Environment Alliance (THEA) is in search of a full-time community coordinator to join our team. THEA’s mission is to protect public health and the environment by engaging, educating, and empowering impacted communities to advocate effectively for the
clean-up of historical contamination. We achieve our mission through a multi-disciplinary approach which utilizes grassroots organizing, media exposure, and strategic science to create and mentor movements towards solutions. We work from the bottom-up and the top-down to educate and engage the public and policymakers to support a clean, healthy environment in the Houston region.
The community coordinator will be responsible for engaging stakeholders such as community
residents, organizations, businesses, and government offices to implement community-wide
initiatives. The community coordinator will split their time between THEA and our partner
organization the Healthy Port Communities Coalition (HPCC) in their community outreach
responsibilities. HPCC is a coalition of nonprofit, community-driven organizations that work to
create a healthier Houston. HPCC recognizes the importance of an informed and active local
community and provides information and tools for local residents to advocate for themselves and
their communities. The ideal candidate would be able to perform in the following role with
passion, strategy, and initiative.

THE MAIN FUNCTIONS AND TASKS OF THIS ROLE:

  1. Serve as a knowledgeable representative of THEA and HPCC to stakeholders
  2. Collaborate in the development and execution of outreach initiatives both in-office and in
    communities across Harris County
  3. Develop and present informational materials and presentations to stakeholders
  4. Disseminate, retrieve, and track information across THEA and HPCC projects for the
    purpose of informing the public, evaluating outreach performance, and improving
    strategies
  5. Maintain regular communication with stakeholders and policy makers to be in-the-know
    about community events and concerns
  6. Work collaboratively with staff and partners to drive programmatic initiatives
  7. Participate in ongoing discussions about HPCC targets to clean up pollution and improve
    air quality in Houston’s port communities.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • 1-3 years of community organizing experience
  • Experience and comfort public speaking
  • Leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a broad range of diverse individuals in both written and verbal form
  • Effective and empathetic listener that gives and receives feedback constructively
  • Computer proficiency, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Excel, Word,
  • Powerpoint
  • Self-starter capable of managing time and a variety of tasks with the ability to
  • React quickly and shift priorities
  • Initiative to take on projects and lead team members in the office and in the field
  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to the environment and the well-being of the public
  • Ability to effectively work independently and within a collaborative environment
  • Based in the Houston area with a reliable form of transportation

Preferred

  • 2-years minimum academic, professional, or real-world experience in related fields such as community organizing, campaign management, public health, environmental sciences, environmental justice, toxicology, or public policy
  • Bilingual
  • Issue based campaign experience
  • Experience working in a small-medium quick-shifting work setting
  • Experience creating, disseminating, collecting, and organizing issue based materials and metrics

SCHEDULE + TRAVEL:
THEA’s office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (CST). Some
evenings and weekends are required each month. The nature of this role involves remote work,
flexible work schedules, and locations of work. Field travel is required for this position and
mileage is reimbursed by THEA.

SALARY + BENEFITS:
This full-time position offers competitive compensation with a salary range of $46,000/yr –
$52,000/yr. THEA’s benefits package includes medical benefits, paid vacation and sick leave,
and employer sponsored retirement plan with up to a 3% employer match. This is a grant funded
position. There is no guarantee that this position will extend beyond one year of employment.
