Environmental Institute of Houston seeks Executive Director

The Executive Director heads the Environmental Institute of Houston (EIH) and is responsible for administering budgets obtained from the Legislature, grants, contracts, and donations. The Executive Director supervises a staff engaged in education, outreach, and research; interacts with an advisory board, performs outreach to many external constituencies and is responsible for developing resources for EIH activities.

Duties:

• Administers EIH budgets and projects. Completes monthly reconciliations. Reviews all travel authorizations, contracts, purchase requests, and vouchers. Strategic development of budgets and policies. Develops long-range forecasts of program needs and opportunities. Produces annual reports on program activities. Trains staff and students on proper sampling/safety techniques
• Supervises EIH staff, overseeing environmental education department staff as well as administrative and website staff. Manages bi-weekly and monthly payroll and absence approvals. Responsible for EIH staff performance assessments. Designs and manages staff and resources engaged in highly complex field and laboratory research studies involving multi-institution teams.
• Develops proposals for external funding, manages EIH grants, and facilitates research.
• Manages and supervises on-going research grants and research staff including scheduling, study design, data analysis, training and quality assurance, proposal development, serving as principal investigator on research projects, development of continuing technical education course offerings, as well as report and manuscript development.
• Participates in and represents EIH and the University on regional and national technical and scientific committees, which deal with various aspects of environmental science and natural resource conservation. Outreach to external constituencies (guest speaker requests and external advisory council seats).
• Coordinates partnership activities with agencies, businesses, and environmental organizations. Organizes and holds semi-annual Advisory Board Meeting and end of year Recognition Reception for EIH funders (granting agencies, donors) and project partners.
• Responsible for EIH research program policy/procedure development, long-range forecasting, and strategic planning.
• Acts as the Quality Assurance Officer for state contracts and performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

1. Master’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Business Management, or related field.
2. Minimum seven years of progressive leadership experience in department-level program involving research, education, and outreach of environmental topics in a higher education setting.
3. Knowledge of important state, regional, and national environmental issues.
4. Knowledge of grant writing, grant management and funding agency requirements.
5. Skills using PeopleSoft and other computer software for data processing and communication.
6. Skills in reading scientific instruments and understanding data produced.
7. Ability to work with external constituents and advisory board members.
8. Ability to explain scientific concepts to a variety of audiences and to coordinate project teams.

Desired:

Doctoral degree.

Salary: $107,919 – $118,711 per year
