Air Alliance Houston seeks Interns for Summer 2023

Air Alliance Houston’s internship program was created to maintain a diverse workplace with regard to race, culture, ethnicity, wealth, religion, language, ability, gender, sexual orientation, and school setting.

We encourage all students 18 years or older to apply including FirstGen students, community college students, and non-traditional students. If you have recently graduated, but are no more than 1 semester out of school, then you would qualify, too!

The AAH Team has identified 5 paid placements this summer and will re-check our need for the fall and spring semesters. Some of these positions will be available year round, including communications and legal support.

From tackling the plastic crisis to encouraging alternative transportation, we’re positive we have the best summer internships around!

Application Deadline May 22. Those moving forward should expect an interview request no later than June 2.

Internship Requirements and Pay:

  • At least 10 hours/week
  • In office minimum 1 day/week (preferably on AAH agreed upon in-office days)
  • At least 1 semester commitment (minimum of 10 weeks)
  • We do not accept interns under 18 years of age
  • No major or field of study requirement unless specified
  • No GPA requirement
  • No education level requirement unless specified
  • Paid internships are compensated at $20/hour with no benefits, personal time off or other stipends. Interns are eligible for mileage and expense reimbursements.

COMMUNICATIONS

This intern would work with the AAH communications team to help maintain our website with events, action alerts and other updates. They would also work with various AAH staff to create talking points about air quality issues and vision + create other communications materials as needed.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROJECT PLANNING

This intern would work with multiple departments to write the curriculum and create necessary materials for a photography and environmental justice project for grade-schoolers (6th-8th grade level). The purpose of the project is for participants to define environmental justice based on their lived experience and to provide a visual representation of the environmental harms/injustices that are seen in where they learn, live, and play.

COMMUNITY AIR MONITORING PROGRAM

This intern would help organize AAH signature Sampling the City bike ride and air monitoring events. This would include reaching out to communities, planning bike routes, and creating a data review presentation. This person should be comfortable with being outside for longer periods of time and bicycle riding.

PLASTICS POLLUTION CAMPAIGN DESIGN

Local industry is touting advanced recycling – or plastic burning – as the solution to the plastic crisis. AAH knows that this process is detrimental to air quality and public health. This intern will work with our Executive Director to develop a plan for a future Plastic Pollution Campaign. The plan will counter industry messages and mobilize communities to action.

LEGAL SUPPORT

This intern would assist our Executive Director to advance the organization’s legal and regulatory strategy including rule-making related to the Clean Air Act. A competitive candidate will have some legal experience and/or an interest in public interest or environmental law.
