Texas Parks and Wildlife Department seeks Community Engagement Coordinator

Primary Location: Texas-Austin

Schedule: Full-time

Standard Hours Per Week: 40.00

Travel: Yes, 50 % of the Time

Salary (Pay Basis): 5,169.75 – 5,169.75 (Monthly)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Outdoor Education and Outreach Manager, the Community Engagement Coordinator works to create and enhance inclusive environments in Texas State Parks. This position manages both external and internal inclusion initiatives including engaging new and diverse community partners and leading the facilitation of internal diversity trainings for park staff. It nurtures strategic relationships with community groups and schools, with emphasis on audiences traditionally underrepresented in the outdoors. This position has the opportunity to bring new ideas forward to create organizational change to welcome audiences who often experience more barriers to participating in outdoor recreation activities. Performs advanced (senior-level) consultative services and technical assistance work. Performs additional duties as assigned.  Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

One year of developing, assisting, and/or delivering trainings for adults;

Two years experience building partnerships with diverse community groups.

Two years experience conducting outreach, education, or event coordination with diverse populations;

Licensure:  

Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid Class “C” Texas driver’s license.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Education:

One additional year of experience conducting outreach, education, or event coordination with diverse populations may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 60 semester hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Multicultural and Diversity Studies, Communications, Public Relations, Community Studies, Human Resources, or a closely related field.

Experience:

One year experience implementing organizational change related to diversity and inclusion priorities

One year experience engaging diverse audiences to address barriers to outdoor recreation

Bilingual in English and Spanish.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of best practices in diversity and inclusion issues, including cultural competency;

Knowledge of common barriers to participating in outdoor recreation;

Knowledge of best practices in volunteer recruitment, retention and recognition;

Knowledge of operations within outdoor settings such as parks, refuges, nature centers, camps or similar;

Knowledge of best practices in customer service and inclusive environments;

Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques including curriculum design principles, learning theory, group and individual teaching techniques;

Knowledge of public administration and management techniques;

Knowledge of program management processes and techniques;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook;

Skill in effective verbal and written communications;

Skill in designing and writing engaging newsletters;

Skill in facilitating meetings and trainings using web applications, such as Zoom, Skype, or other webinar applications, including web cameras;

Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions;

Skill in event coordination and marketing efforts;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

Skill in developing and maintaining relationships with civic groups, community leaders and public figures;

Skill in social media engagement;

Ability to communicate effectively with the public;

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

Ability to work as a member of a team;

Ability to devise solutions to problems

Ability to prepare reports;

Ability to develop, evaluate, and interpret policies and procedures;

Ability to serve as a lead worker providing direction to others;

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;

Required to work overtime and weekends, as necessary;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 40% with possible overnight stays;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

Non-smoking work environment in State buildings and vehicles.
