Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge seeks Student Trainee (Visitor Services): DEADLINE 10:59 PM MARCH 24

This job is open to students. Current students enrolled in accredited educational institutions from high school to graduate level. Includes internships, pathways, and other student programs.

Clarification from agency

Student who have been accepted for enrollment or who are enrolled at least half-time in an accredited high school, college, professional, technical, vocational, or trade school pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

Duties

Only experience and education obtained by 03/24/2023 will be considered.

As a Student Trainee (Visitor Services) your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • At a visitor center information desk, answers visitors’ questions that are usually routine and repetitive and relate largely to factual situations, such as geographical location of facilities, trails, tour routes, boat ramps, and other recreational areas. Obtains and posts various information to records, such as number of visitors, survey information on length of visitor stay, size of visiting parties, and patterns of visitor use. Maintains supply of informative materials and other stock items; sells books and other items. Operates audio visual equipment for videos and other multi-media programs.
  • Assists with environmental education program as activity or small group leader. Maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Provides communications service for operational activities.
  • Develops and conducts interpretive talks and guided tour programs, presenting facts that are usually limited in variety.

To be eligible for a Pathways Program internship program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on at least a half-time basis and in good standing who will be continuing education into the next semester or have received a notice of acceptance for enrollment. (You are required to submit a copy of your transcript or notice of acceptance.)
  • Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution or state-approved home school. These may include high schools, colleges, universities, technical, trade, vocational, or business schools, and state approved home school secondary and post-secondary programs.
  • Qualifying certificate programs are post-high school programs equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Pathways Student Intern: The Department of the Interior Internship Program (Pathways) is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school.

Special Provisions for Interns with Previous Related Education or Experience: Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.

Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:
Currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled on at least a half-time basis in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate in an academic field related to the duties of this position. This enrollment will continue during my employment.

Minimum Qualification [GS-03]

  1. Completed 1 academic year of post-high school education. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent in an accredited college or university. OR
  2. Completed 6 months of general experience that demonstrates ability to perform the work of the position. General experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrated your ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with visitor services related work. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement

Minimum Qualification [GS-04]

  1. Completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate’s degree. OR
  2. 6 months general experience and 6 months specialized experience. General experience is defined as (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: Answering visitor questions; Collecting fees, selling permits, and balancing funds; Operating audio visual equipment; Assisting in outreach activities. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution’s registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units.
