Family Day: Intro to Birding @ Gulf Coast Bird Observatory

Bring the whole family to Gulf Coast bird Observatory for an introduction to birding. Attendees will get to see some birds up close during bird banding, then learn the basics of bird anatomy and bird watching. They will end the day with a nature walk on our beautiful trails.

Woodland Park Bird Survey @ Woodland Park

Meet count leader Jason Bonilla in the parking lot of Woodland Park. Please note that the park does not have a maintained trail system. As such, there is a lot of poison ivy that is somewhat unavoidable when walking the park and looking for birds. Additionally, there are terrain changes and unstable areas. Participants should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. They usually meet on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Holiday with the Cranes @ Galveston Island

Holiday with the Cranes is presented by the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council, a membership organization that connects people with Galveston’s natural environment.

At Galveston Island, the Sandhill Cranes will begin to arrive on the coast and people who are attending this event will get to greet and welcome them to their new homes!

  • Dawn Patrol: Breathtaking Views of Sandhill Cranes in Flight at Sunrise (6:30 – 7:30 am)
  • Winter Birding on the Isle’s West End: Birding Hotspots Out West (9:00 am – noon)

 

Second Saturday Bird Walks @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Free to attend, donations appreciated. Work on your bird watching skills while helping the Arboretum monitor bird populations on a fun, relaxed morning walk. Join the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center on the second Saturday of each month at the front door of the building for a two-hour bird walk led by Kelsey Low and Theo Ostler, a resident bird enthusiast. We welcome all levels of bird watching skill and all ages (as long as you’re quiet) – but no dogs, please! If you have binoculars of your own, please bring them. Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. Monthly Meeting @ Houston Community College Conference Center

Join Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. for their “Vegan 2nd Saturdays” Monthly Meetings, Presentations & Vegan Potlucks

Held on the “2nd Saturdays” of each month, they will enjoy a delicious vegan potluck and meeting, along with a discussion, film screening, food demo or speaker presentation on intersectional issues of veganism, animal rights, environmentalism, nonviolence, health and more. Each month will be something new! Their new venue is at the HCC Conference Center.

They are asking for a donation of $5 per person to help cover our facility rental expenses. All attendees must bring a vegan entree to share at the potluck (serving size to feed 10 people)!

Please remember to bring a vegan dish to share with the group! Their events are always vegan, so please only vegan or raw vegan foods (no animal-derived ingredients). Also bring reusable dinnerware and plates to keep the event earth-friendly. If you have questions on ingredients, feel free to contact them.

They will also feature a new discussion topic on inter sectional issues each month, such as: animal rights, ethical vegan living, vegan health & nutrition, cooking, world hunger solutions, eco-friendly living, nonviolence and more! Some months will also include film screenings and/or guest speakers and food demos.

Houston Community College Conference Center is located at 3100 Main St, 3rd Floor, Houston, TX 77002. See below for map. Free Parking is available on level 7 & 8 of the HCC Administration parking garage at Main & Elgin. Use elevator from parking garage to 3rd floor breezeway, which leads to the Conference suites. You must enter the building through the parking garage and not street-level.

All attendees must sign in at the Security Desk.

Galvy Bird Watch @ DOS VACAS MUERTAS BIRD SANCTUARY

This is all-volunteer effort takes a snapshot of bird populations to monitor their status and distribution across the Western Hemisphere.  Discover new areas to bird which may not be normally accessible and take advantage of this great opportunity to bird with some of our foremost birding experts.

Christmas Bird Count @ Mercer’s West Side Arboretum

Meet up for an early morning bird count along the Cypress and Spring Creek Greenways. Participants should meet in the Cypress Parking Lot of Mercer’s West Side Arboretum at 8 a.m. Together with Bird Count guide Al Barr, make notes on the numbers and types of birds that you observe at Mercer Botanic Gardens. The count continues as participants drive north to experience Pundt Park and a variety of other parks along the Spring Creek Greenway. Feeder watchers are also encouraged to participate. Collected data will be reported to the Audubon Society. Bring your binoculars, field guide, and bird identification book. No registration required.
