Pledge to turn off your sprinkler system for the winter.
Turfgrass, particularly St. Augustine, naturally goes dormant during winter months and uses all available energy to grow and strengthen the root system. Allowing grass to brown during the cool months results in healthier lawns with less disease in the spring.
Once you pledge, your village earns a point in the contest! Villages with the most points will receive cash awards for their scholarship funds from program sponsors.
Pledge between August 15 and December 31 and earn Two Points.
Learn how to submit your pledge at thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.
The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is Dec. 14, 2018, through Jan. 5, 2019, each year. Organized by the National Audubon Society, this global, all-volunteer effort collects data on local bird populations. Individual counts are open to birders of all levels, and there is no fee to participate. Several events are scheduled across the region. For details and dates for each count, visit houstonaudubon.org.
Make sure that your Christmas Tree is ready to be recycled. You bought a live Christmas tree this year and want to dispose of it. The environmentally responsible thing is to keep the tree out of the landfill, but in order to recycle your tree, you must avoid flocking and tinsel of any type. After Christmas, remove your tree from the stand, remove all tinsel (if you added any), lights and ornaments and recycle your tree by one of three options:
- The Stella Roberts Recycling Center
- Manvel location
- Green Waste Day
Visit keeppearlandbeautiful.org for details of each option.
Live trees only WITHOUT flocking, tinsel, or decorations.

All About Central City Co-Op
In September 2001, Jennifer Georgantas and Pat Greer dreamed of a community of people joining together each week around healthy, earth-friendly food. This dream became a reality 15 years ago with the founding of Central City Co-Op, Houston’s very first organic co-op.
Organic Produce, Organic Community
Our mission is to support sustainable, chemical free farming practices through offering both 1) sustainably raised local and 2) certified USDA organic national produce and farm goods to our community at the fairest prices possible.
Everything we carry on our shelves and stock in our shares is either locally, sustainably grown by farmers we know or is nationally-certified USDA organic. Both are great options for you and for our planet!
Central City Co-Op also provides a space for individuals to come together as a community. We support every member of our community in their journey to learn more about where their food comes from, how it’s produced, and how the local economy is impacted by food choices.
