October is one of the best months for viewing wildflowers at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, and it’s also a perfect time to plant seeds for next spring. Join the Arboretum for a wildflower walk to see what’s blooming in their pocket prairie, and learn what species might be good for your home garden. In the classroom, you’ll learn how to identify some of the major groups of wildflowers here in Houston, and you’ll even get some native flower seeds to take home. Wear walking shoes and dress for the weather.
Want to learn how to ‘shoot’ those birds you love? Or capture the breathtaking beauty of a coastal sunrise? Or maybe you’re more into details with a close-up shot of a native plant that intrigues you. Join photographer David LeMaster as he shares pointers on wildlife photography and goes a step further as he demonstrates. This is a hands-on session with the opportunity to take photographs. It is recommended that each participant bring a personal camera, but it is not required. Participants, meet at Tracey’s Theater, inside the Nature Center.
The family-oriented Nuture Nature series is offered the first Saturday of each month. The series covers hands-on topics and is free with regular admission. Enjoy a fun, educational morning, then stay to picnic, bird, hike, fish, or just relax — a great way to spend a morning.

Discover the delicious side of nature. Texas provides an abundance of wild edible leaves, seeds, flowers, roots, and shoots – if you know where to look. Learn where to find, how to identify, and how to properly prepare a seasonal selection of local edible plant species. As the landscape changes throughout the year, the selection of plants will change, so you can repeat the class each season to experience new content.
