Exploration Green Conservancy’s Planting Event @ Exploration Green in Clear Lake City
Nov 18 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

Exploration Green Conservancy and partner organizations invite volunteers Saturday, November 18, 2017, 8 am-12 pm (or until all trees are planted) to tree planting on the Habitat Island at Exploration Green in Clear Lake City, led by Trees for Houston. Native trees and wetlands on the island, situated in Exploration Green’s first lake, will create a refuge for migratory birds and waterbirds. Exploration Green Conservancy and project partners are redeveloping the former Clear Lake City golf course into a state of the art stormwater detention and recreation area.

Access to the island itself will be by boat and will be limited to 50 people. However, there will be volunteer activities on shore as well. Children with a parent present are welcome to do work onshore. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet and muddy. Tools will be provided.

Parking will be along the street near the entrance to the park at 1800 Reseda Rd, Houston TX 77062.

In the event of inclement weather, the rain date will be November 25, 2017.

Eastside as Found by Jae Boggess – Funded by a grant from Rice Design Alliance, this photography exhibit documents industrial and commercial buildings east of downtown. In danger of demolition, these neglected and vacant buildings help tell the story of Houston as a repeated boomtown and have the potential to define a unique sense of place as these neighborhoods change. Architect Jae Boggess hopes that the exhibit will prompt a dialogue about what will become of our city’s built history.

Encounter: Meeting Points on Buffalo Bayou is a collaboration between students from the University of Houston Graphic Design and Creative Writing programs with funding support from the Mitchell Center for the Arts. The exhibit features proposals for site-based installations and engagement events to be held on sites along Buffalo Bayou’s East Sector in spring 2018. The installations express an interpretation of the history, economy, resilience, culture and community values of the East End and Fifth Ward communities as they relate to the bayou and green spaces.

On view through January 29 (Monday–Friday from 9 am–5 pm).

High Island Workdays @ High Island
Dec 9 @ 8:30 am – 12:00 pm

Workdays are held once a month, October through March on the second Saturday of the month. We start work around 8:30 AM and work until about noon, when we break for lunch, provided by Houston Audubon and prepared by the lunch crew. Lunch at the picnic area of Boy Scout Woods is a good chance to visit with other volunteers and recharge from a morning of exercise and work. After lunch, we take about an hour to tie up any loose ends and clean up.

Come be a part of sanctuary maintenance, habitat restoration, and Houston Audubon’s amazing volunteer workforce. Email Pete Deichmann at pdeichmann@houstonaudubon.org for more information or to be put on the email list.

Habitat Restoration

Our volunteer group meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon at the HPARD Greenhouse.

We propagate plants from locally collected native seed. A typical workday may include seeding pots, bumping up trays into 1-gallon containers, separating seedlings, and weeding pots. We will also have special seed collecting trips, invasive species removal workdays, and planting events in our restored prairies!

We are also beginning to conduct semi-annual vegetation transects and monthly bird surveys at our current and future restoration sites. If you’re good at identifying plants or birds or if you would like to learn more about them, come join us!

If you’re interested in volunteering for the NRMP, email kelli.ondracek@houstontx.gov.
