CWI: Better Public Engagement Practices @ Houston-Galveston Area Council
Oct 24 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Public engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of generating mutual benefit between two or more groups. Most public entities conduct some form of public engagement regularly to better inform their internal processes and to meet federal, state and local requirements. But how can those entities and others in the region better engage in meaningful interactions with their constituents?

Join H-GAC for another Clean Waters Initiative workshop on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Houston-Galveston Area Council, Conference Rooms B and C (second floor) to learn more about public engagement efforts in the region and how you can apply successful techniques to your own projects.

Speakers from the Galveston Bay Foundation, Artist Boat, and the Texas A&M – Texas Coastal Watershed Program will provide participants with an overview of the mechanisms they have used to engage partners, stakeholders, and the public. Speakers will highlight which efforts have been successful, providing “lessons learned” to help attendees better engage in their respective communities.

Following each presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and further delve into the topic area. For additional information or assistance, e-mail Kathy.Janhsen@h-gac.com or call 713-993-2423.

An Introduction to DRAWDOWN and What You Can Do About It @ First Unitarian Universalist Church
Jan 14 @ 1:00 pm

Our first goal in reversing global warming is drawdown. This is the point where the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere levels off and begins to decline. If we get moving, we could reach drawdown by 2050.  At this event co-sponsored by Green Building Resource Center and Houston Climate Protection Alliance, the Climate Action Team of First Unitarian Universalist Church will summarize the book, Drawdown, then break into groups to focus on particular solutions:  organic farming and land use, family planning, refrigerant management, or your favorite action issue.

RSVP: NanHildreth@riseup.net or 713-504-9901

Religion vs. Science is based on a five-year study of religious Americans’ views of science, called the Religious Understandings of Science (RUS) study. The RUS study surveyed 10,000 Americans about their views on the relationship between religion and science, as well as specific scientific issues such as stem cell research, evolution and creation, science education, and others. The survey was in addition to more than 300 in-person interviews.  Pastor Lee Hsia of Houston’s First Baptist Church and Rabbi Geoff Mitelman of Sinai and Synapses will moderate the conversation and provide unique perspectives on the book’s content.

Public Discussion: Buyout Best Practices in the Wake of Harvey @ BioScience Research Collaborative
Feb 6 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Please join the Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium for a public discussion of

Buyout Best Practices in the Wake of Harvey

Harris County has long had a program to buyout flood-prone homes and structures, ensuring people and structures are out of harm’s way and, further, that recurring costs do not befall the homeowner or the community. But, there is a broader opportunity for buyouts to be a part of a comprehensive multi-purpose strategy for assuring more resilient and livable neighborhoods, through coordination with flood control infrastructure, parks, and housing.

The Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium is bringing together leading experts on the topic of buyouts from across the country to share best practices and knowledge in order to inform and help guide local decision-makers during the region’s recovery from Harvey.

You are invited to join the Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium for the discussion on buyout best practices that will include:

  • How to work with (and around) federal requirements
  • How to coordinate with different agencies
  • How to utilize buyouts as part of an overall neighborhood strategy
  • How to address housing issues
  • How to build community support

Space is limited so registration is required.

Agenda and Panelists include

Introduction – Christof Spieler, project manager, Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium; vice president, Huitt-Zollars

Moderator – Kyle Shelton, program manager and fellow, Kinder Institute for Urban Research

Expert Panel

  • Dave Canaan, Mecklenburg County
  • Gavin Smith, UNC-Chapel Hill
  • Rachel Wider, New York State Homes and Community Renewal
