Journey down armadillo tunnels, learn how to echo-locate, and meet two of the most amazing Houston mammals as the group ventures into the night and see who’s awake out there. Tadpole Troopers is a nature class and outdoor adventure for parents and children to share together.

Masks are optional for vaccinated participants and social distancing is recommended. Please wear a mask if unvaccinated. Please contact Julie Francis at hermannparkbirdsurvey@gmail.com if you’d like to participate. The Hermann Park Survey is conducted on the second Monday of the month. Everyone is welcome — beginners, experts, or even if you’re just curious. Please bring binoculars. If you don’t have any, let them know in advance and they’ll provide them.

Tyke Hike (18 months – 3 years) @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Tyke Hike SquareEncourage your child’s curiosity about nature and spend time with them exploring outdoors! Children 18 months to 3 years, with their adult companions, can join a naturalist for a story reading, a simple nature activity or craft, and a stroller-friendly hike on the beautiful Arboretum trails. Enjoy an interesting new nature experience each week with themes such as turtles, armadillos, spiders, and trees.

Please dress for weather. Tyke Hikes take place rain or shine. Closed-toe shoes are best for trail hikes. Older preschoolers are welcome but are the responsibility of the adult companion.

Through stories, hands-on activities, nature walks, and crafts, your children will be inspired with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world around them. Each week’s Titmouse Club lesson features a different nature theme, focusing on Houston-area animals and habitats. Your children will enjoy nature stories and puppets, hands-on biofacts, nature crafts, up-close animal encounters, and a short walk in the woods, all led by volunteer docent teachers.

Science Sprouts (ages 4-5) @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Science Sprouts is an exciting series for curious kids that love nature and science. Classes will include a short lesson on the topic of the day followed by a nature walk on the trails of the Arboretum. Each class will have a fun mixture of games, live animals, biofacts, crafts, story time, or music. Parents are welcome to participate with their child, or drop them off.
