Not Just a Walk in the Park

The City of Galveston owns 685 acres of land at the east end of the Island at Boddeker Drive and Apffel Park. The vision of the East End Lagoon Advisory Committee is to transform this resource into a world-class, sustainable, natural recreational park and nature preserve with trails and an interpretive center. GINTC assisted in raising the money necessary to develop the master plan and serves on the planning committee. Click here to see the East End Lagoon Nature Park & Preserve Master Plan.
The potential of the property to enhance public awareness of Galveston’s natural resources and wildlife habitats, weather and tides and waterborne industry is extraordinary. Tidal lagoons, wetlands, grasslands, dunes, inter-tidal marshes, sea grass beds, gulf access and a view of the Houston Ship Channel entrance are all part of the area.
Bring the whole family to Gulf Coast bird Observatory for an introduction to birding. Attendees will get to see some birds up close during bird banding, then learn the basics of bird anatomy and bird watching. They will end the day with a nature walk on our beautiful trails.
To register, contact info@gcbo.org or call us at 979-480-0999. Classes are $50 for one person, plus $10 for each additional family member.
Meet count leader Jason Bonilla in the parking lot of Woodland Park. Please note that the park does not have a maintained trail system. As such, there is a lot of poison ivy that is somewhat unavoidable when walking the park and looking for birds. Additionally, there are terrain changes and unstable areas. Participants should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. They usually meet on the fourth Saturday of the month.
Unplugged Adventure: Foraging the Prairie at Rock Hollow with Dr. Vorderbruggen
Take a walk through the historic Rock Hollow Prairie with foraging expert Dr. Vorderbruggen. During this adventure, you will learn which prairie plants are edible and which ones have medicinal properties while exploring a portion of the historic Warren ranch only accessible during scheduled events! The tour will begin at the Warren Ranch office.
Join Nature Discovery Center while they sneak up on lizards, peer into the trees for looks at birds, discover the latest blooms and their pollinators in our Pocket Prairie, spy on the secret life of animals that hide under logs, and investigate more seasonal nature surprises! Learn some tips to explore nature with your family in your own backyard or on your travels. This event is a family event for kids 4 and up with their parents or adult caregivers.
