Tyke Hike (18 months – 3 years) @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Tyke Hike SquareEncourage your child’s curiosity about nature and spend time with them exploring outdoors! Children 18 months to 3 years, with their adult companions, can join a naturalist for a story reading, a simple nature activity or craft, and a stroller-friendly hike on the beautiful Arboretum trails. Enjoy an interesting new nature experience each week with themes such as turtles, armadillos, spiders, and trees.

Please dress for weather. Tyke Hikes take place rain or shine. Closed-toe shoes are best for trail hikes. Older preschoolers are welcome but are the responsibility of the adult companion.

Arboretum’s Home School Program (ages 5-12) @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

A different three-week science unit is taught each month, with classes consisting of instructional time, hands-on activities, and outdoor activities. Extension ideas will be provided to parents so they can follow up with lessons and activities at home. Visit houstonarboretum.org for the class schedule.

Image result for khb logo houstonIt’s time to start registering your teams and volunteers for this year’s KHB Day, which will be held on Apr. 6, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Team Registration: Each team leader will be provided with a roster of their registered team members prior to the event.

Volunteer form: All volunteers must complete an online volunteer application this year, which you will find at form.jotform.com.

The deadline to register teams/locations and volunteers is March 27th. KHB will not be providing paper registrations this year.

Children’s Nature Classes @ Armand Bayou Nature Center

Looking for a place to get your children outdoors? ABNC’s EcoClasses will allow your child to explore, discover and observe (STEM). Join them for some great nature experiences! Check out their website at abnc.org for details or call 713-274-2668 to reserve your spot.

EcoTots are for children 18-36 months with an adult every Friday.
EcoKids are for children ages 3-6 every Wednesday and Friday.
EcoSchoolers are for homeschool children ages 7-10 every Wednesday and Friday.    EcoAdventurers are for children ages 11-14 every Wednesday.

Please bring a Snack, Refillable Water Bottle, mask, closed toe shoes and dress for the weather.

E.P.I.C Program @ Eddie V. Grey Wetlands Education Center

Environment Protectors Initiating Change (E.P.I.C)

E.P.I.C. is a free service learning club for high school teens that is aimed at learning about, and solving coastal environmental problems through hands-on projects.

HPARD’s Greenhouse Workday @ Memorial Park Greenhouse

Volunteers meet the second and fourth Thursday of every month to propagate plants from locally collected native seed. A typical workday may include seeding pots, bumping up trays into 1-gallon containers, separating seedlings, and weeding pots. They will also have special seed collecting trips, invasive species removal workdays, and planting events in restored prairies.

Gardening for Birds, Butterflies and Other Pollinators course @ Rice University

As birds, butterflies and bees become increasingly imperiled, more homeowners are creating gardens to nurture and sustain pollinators. These dynamic gardens not only support wildlife but also provide an attractive and healthy environment for people.

Master gardener and naturalist Glenn Olsen explains which wildflowers, flowering shrubs, fruit trees and even vegetables offer food and shelter for pollinators. Learn to create an outdoor oasis for yourself and for pollinating creatures. The class includes a field trip to the Rice University Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden, the Urban Pocket Prairie and the Lynn Lowery Arboretum. Limited Kiosk Opening @ Boy Scout Woods Sanctuary

The kiosk at Boy Scout Woods opens on Friday, March 29 and closes on Sunday, May 5. Many activities are planned, including:

  • Birding walks – 3 times/day (Apr. 4 – 29)
  • Photography walks (Apr. 4-29)
  • Bird-friendly plant sale (Apr. 1 until sold out)
  • Land Sea & Sky binoculars – weekends in April
  • Flight in Focus – 2-day photography event (Apr. 6-7)

Prairie Friday @ Armand Bayou Nature Center

An opportunity to participate in stewardship work for registered volunteers–if you are not already a volunteer, please check out Armand Bayou Nature Centers’ website for more information.

Help restore the prairie by potting and planting native plants and forbs every Friday, rain or shine. You do not need to attend every Friday.
