Community Workdays @ Edith L. Moore Natural Sanctuary_

Join Houston Audubon at the Edith Moore Nature Sanctuary for a morning of gardening and sanctuary maintenance. Houston Audubon’s team works 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., once a month on the 4th Saturday from September through May (3rd Saturday in November and December).  Activities include trail maintenance, filling bird feeders and baths, litter pick-up, native gardening, and invasive species removal. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors and meet like-minded friends.

Bring water, sunscreen, bug repellent & gloves/clippers if you have them. Wear closed-toe shoes & long pants. Bring sack lunch if desired. Children of any change are welcome with their parent/chaperone. (Minimum age without a parent/chaperone is 12 years.)

All volunteers must pre-register by the Wednesday before workday with Bethany Foshée (713-932-1639).

Deer Park Prairie: Workday @ Deer Park Prairie

Workday: Fourth Saturday of each month, 9:00 a.m. to noon or later

Visitation of Deer Park Prairie is by appointment only. Since the prairie will be attended on scheduled workdays, they will be ideal days to visit. Please email HNPAT@TexasPrairie for appointment on either workdays or any other days.

Please bring a signed liability release: adult or  adult+children

Please do not park directly in front of our neighbors’ houses – park across the street.

As always on the prairie, wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. For seed collecting, bring clippers  if you have them. Also recommended are long-sleeved shirt, hat, water, insect repellent, sunscreen.

Saturdays in Nature program @ Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary

On the fourth Saturday of each month (September-May), Houston Audubon Docents lead a hands-on science program for families to participate in together. From building bird feeders to identifying backyard bugs, naturalists of all ages enjoy quality time outdoors, creative art projects, guided nature walks, and hands-on fun.

4th Saturday Nature Walks @ Edith L. Moore Natural Sanctuary_

Join Houston Audubon for a free nature walk at Edith Moore Nature Sanctuary, September through May on the 4th Saturday of the month.

Meet at the Edith Moore Cabin at 2 p.m.

Please note that in November and December, the walk will be on the third Saturday.

Jones Park Bicycling @ Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center

The Jones-Bender, Judy Overby Bell and Spring Creek Greenway trails are open for bicycling. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

All Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center programs and events are free of charge unless otherwise noted and open to the public regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, physical ability, national origin, or religion. Anyone requiring special assistance to participate in these programs should contact the nature center. Programs meet at the Nature Center unless otherwise noted. Solid shoes are recommended. Tyke Hike (18 months – 3 years) @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Tyke Hike SquareEncourage your child’s curiosity about nature and spend time with them exploring outdoors! Children 18 months to 3 years, with their adult companions, can join a naturalist for a story reading, a simple nature activity or craft, and a stroller-friendly hike on the beautiful Arboretum trails. Enjoy an interesting new nature experience each week with themes such as turtles, armadillos, spiders, and trees.

Please dress for weather. Tyke Hikes take place rain or shine. Closed-toe shoes are best for trail hikes. Older preschoolers are welcome but are the responsibility of the adult companion.

Arboretum’s Home School Program (ages 5-12) @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Mar 25 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

A different three-week science unit is taught each month, with classes consisting of instructional time, hands-on activities, and outdoor activities. Extension ideas will be provided to parents so they can follow up with lessons and activities at home. Visit houstonarboretum.org for the class schedule.
