Science Sprouts is an exciting series for curious kids that love nature and science. Classes will include a short lesson on the topic of the day followed by a nature walk on the trails of the Arboretum. Each class will have a fun mixture of games, live animals, biofacts, crafts, story time, or music. Parents are welcome to participate with their child, or drop them off. The After School Nature Explorers Club is designed for school-age children, 6-12 years old, who are interested in investigating the great outdoors. During each session, they will explore the natural world, focusing on native habitats and wildlife. They will go on nature hikes, dip-net in the ponds, meet live animals, and practice outdoor skills such as tracking, foraging, building shelters, telling stories, playing games, and much more. Adventures will be crafted from the curiosities of the children, allowing them to develop a sense of place while exploring the landscape through play.

Caney Creek/ Linville Bayou (Basin 13)

H-GAC and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality invite area stakeholders to help create a plan to reduce high concentrations of bacteria found in two coastal basins. This meeting is to discuss sources of bacteria, to form committees to consider options to reduce bacteria, and to develop plans to act on those options are scheduled for two of the impacted watersheds.

Meet count leader Jason Bonilla in the parking lot of Woodland Park. Please note that the park does not have a maintained trail system. As such, there is a lot of poison ivy that is somewhat unavoidable when walking the park and looking for birds. Additionally, there are terrain changes and unstable areas. Participants should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. They usually meet on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Join Bethany Foshee, Edith Moore Sanctuary Manager, and Paul Fagala of Wild Birds Unlimited, for a free bird walk at Edith Moore Nature Sanctuary, September through May on the 4th Saturday of the month. Bird walks last 1 hour. Birders can arrive and leave as their schedules require. Novices are welcome!

On the fourth Saturday of each month (September-May), Houston Audubon Docents lead a hands-on science program for families to participate in together. From building bird feeders to identifying backyard bugs, naturalists of all ages enjoy quality time outdoors, creative art projects, guided nature walks, and hands-on fun.

Encourage your child’s curiosity about nature and spend time with them exploring outdoors! Children 18 months to 3 years, with their adult companions, can join a naturalist for a story reading, a simple nature activity or craft, and a stroller-friendly hike on the beautiful Arboretum trails. Enjoy an interesting new nature experience each week with themes such as turtles, armadillos, spiders, and trees.

Please dress for weather. Tyke Hikes take place rain or shine. Closed-toe shoes are best for trail hikes. Older preschoolers are welcome but are the responsibility of the adult companion.
