As birds, butterflies and bees become increasingly imperiled, more homeowners are creating gardens to nurture and sustain pollinators. These dynamic gardens not only support wildlife but also provide an attractive and healthy environment for people.

Master gardener and naturalist Glenn Olsen explains which wildflowers, flowering shrubs, fruit trees and even vegetables offer food and shelter for pollinators. Learn to create an outdoor oasis for yourself and for pollinating creatures. The class includes a field trip to the Rice University Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden, the Urban Pocket Prairie and the Lynn Lowery Arboretum. You may arrange to pick up your supplies on another date & time via this form and not participate in the breakfast. You can also let us know if you are doing your cleanup up on an alternative date using this form.

Keep Pearland Beautiful, in partnership with Shadow Creek Outdoors Club, will be hosting the 4th Annual Pearland Clean & Green event on April 6, 2019 at the Pearland Town Center (11200 Broadway St., Pearland, TX 77584). Clean and Green began in 2016 as a community ‘call to action’ for Shadow Creek Ranch residents to clean up litter and learn about ‘green’ initiatives, centered around the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, and recycle). As one of the largest Master Planned Communities in this region, residents of Shadow Creek Ranch take pride in keeping a clean community. The event has expanded over the years to draw in residents from across the area. The event will begin with a litter cleanup from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. The community will gather at the Pearland Town Center Pavilion from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. for activities, entertainment and educational displays. The event is free to the public.

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful is holding their 26^th annual Trash-Off on Saturday, April 6, 2019. We hope you will help us keep Sugar Land beautiful! Registration form needs to be submitted to KSLB by March 8 . Please see complete, sign, and submit the 2019 Registration Waiver.  If you are a group leader, please collect the registration waiver from each person in your group and submit them to vickigist@kslb.org with your completed group registration spreadsheet.   All volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by a registered participating adult. Volunteers will be assigned to pick up litter at designated sites in Sugar Land and should allow approximately two hours for cleanup. Volunteers will need to provide their own transportation to the meeting site and to their assigned cleanup site. Last year, KSLB volunteers picked up over 2,049 pounds of litter during our Trash-Off!

All of the material at Historic Houston’s Salvage Warehouse has been reclaimed from historic houses that Historic Houston has deconstructed, as well as individual items that have been brought to our Salvage Warehouse.  The Salvage Warehouse, now located at 1200 National, has become a regional resource for reclaimed building materials serving an 11 county region of Southeast Texas. Materials at the Salvage Warehouse include, but are not limited to, reclaimed wood flooring, windows and screens, interior/exterior doors and hardware, interior/exterior siding, paneling, and millwork, lumber, bath and kitchen fixtures, cabinetry, and exterior ironwork.

Salvage Warehouse is open to members on the first and third Saturdays. No appointments needed on Saturdays.

Due to limited staffing during the week, current members can chop at the Salvage Warehouse by appointment Tuesday – Friday between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Members can schedule an appointment by calling 713-553-7035.

Calling people of all faiths or no faith at all in Houston to care for our shared environment during Earth Month & Faith Climate Action Week! You will engage in hands-on environmental stewardship by mulching around plantings, planting native plants & removing trash at the Willow Waterhole Conservation Reserve. This event will offer activities for all ages and skill levels, so bring the whole family, your neighbors and your friends. Meet at The Gathering Place, 5310 South Willow Dr., Houston 77035 to sign in. Tools/supplies will be provided. The conservancy requires signing of a waiver to participate.

The Beautify the Bucket Competition allows participants to take an active role in beautifying Galveston beaches and improving stewardship behaviors. Participants in the competition paint a blue trash barrel destined for Galveston beaches based on a theme: ocean organisms, marine debris, coastal and marine ecosystems, or Galveston recreational activities. After the competition the barrels will be added to Galveston’s beaches where they will be enjoyed by visitors and encourage proper disposal of trash to reduce aquatic trash.

Competitions are hosted to coincide with the Adopt-A-Beach Coast-wide Cleanup events.

Volunteers are needed for tree maintenance and repotting. Tasks run from light to heavy, and there are opportunities for anyone ages ten and up.

When: the second and last Saturday of every month, 8:00 a.m. to noon.

Where: the green space behind 1801 Neptune Lane, Houston, TX 77062—park on the street, near the bridge, and take the paved trail heading northeast. The nursery is visible from the street.

What to bring: work gloves, mud boots (if you have them), insect repellant, sunscreen, and water.

April 13 will mark the grand opening of the refuge, with guided nature walks, van tours of the refuge, kids activities, exhibits, and a nationally-known speaker. The Neches River Refuge has 7,000 acres of beautiful wildlife habitat – forests, wetlands, and trails along the iconic Neches River. Visit tcatexas.org for a tentative schedule.
