H-GAC Texas Stream Team Certified Water Monitor Training @ Brazoria County Public Library - Alvin Branch

The Houston-Galveston Area Council is holding a certified water monitoring training course for new Texas Stream Team volunteers. This training is limited to volunteers willing to monitor in the San Jacinto-Brazos Coastal Basin project area and is limited to 10 trainees. Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the training will be completed in this one-day training session. “Teach Me GIS” Training Courses @ Houston-Galveston Area Council

The H-GAC Data Services GIS Program is partnering with TeachMeGIS to host a series of instructor-led GIS trainings. The course dates, course topics, and pricing, including a 15% discount for H-GAC members and employees, are listed on the GIS Training web page. The next course will be Addressing in ArcGIS for NextGen 9-1-1, July 26 and 27 at H-GAC Training Room, Second Floor.

Detailed information on the content of each course is available by clicking on the course name. If interested in attending one of these courses, select the red “Register Now” button to register for a class on the TeachMeGIS website. When registering, please be sure to select “H-GAC” under the location column of the desired class to receive the discount. Project WILD Workshop: Conservation with children @ Helms Elementary School

Image result for project wildProject WILD invites you to explore and share the fascinating world of wildlife and ecosystems using fun, hands-on educational activities. You will experience engaging TEKS-aligned activities while networking with other educators. Workshop participants receive: 1) 6 hours TEA-approved CPE and TEEAC Credit, 2) Project WILD K-12 guide, and 3) Texas-specific resources Anyone who works with children, including teachers, homeschoolers, informal educators, and scout leaders is welcome. This workshop will be held at Helms Elementary School, 503 W 21st Street from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Monday, July 31, 2017. Flying WILD Education Program

Flying WILD logoFlying WILD is an exciting education program that introduces students to bird conservation through school bird festivals, hands-on classroom activities, and community service projects. Through a partnership with the Council for Environmental Education (the national office for Flying WILD and Project WILD) the Houston Audubon Society (HAS) is now offering Flying WILD training and materials in the Houston area. Each workshop participant will receive the program publication, Flying WILD: An Educator’s Guide to Celebrating Birds along with other teaching materials. To register please complete and return the form below. Space is limited, so registrations will be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis. Registration is just $20 for the entire workshop, so follow the link to register here.

Certified Master Composter Program

Image result for green building resource center logoHOUSTON—Area composting enthusiasts who want to enhance their skills and spread the sustainable practice can become a Master Composter through a training hosted by the City of Houston Green Building Resource Center, Thursday September 21 through Sunday September 24, 2017. The Yard Wise Master Composter Certificate Program, administered by the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling, offers an in-depth course featuring a team of experienced Houston professionals. At the end of the training, Master Composters will be able to make a worm bed, create “compost recipes” for specific plants, and help others embrace the environmental benefits of composting. Offered at the Houston Permitting Center at 1002 Washington Ave., the 4-day program includes classroom work, field trips and lectures from a flurry of guest speakers.

Registration is $40 and seating is limited to 20 participants. Interested composters can learn more or enroll online at codegreenhouston.org or by contacting Steve Stelzer at 832-394-9050 or steve.stelzer@houstontx.gov.

Architecture Center Houston is recruiting volunteers to train and serve as docents for our walking and bicycle tours. Training will take place Saturdays, 8:00 AM to noon, September 23 through October 14, 2017. Tours are offered Saturdays, 10:00 AM to noon, and select Thursdays, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, September through May. Docents are asked to lead 3 to 6 tours during the season or more, if they are interested. Additional time is required for preparation and practice. This varies for each individual and can be done on their own schedule.

Content and public speaking skills are covered in training. An architecture background is not required, but a strong interest is preferred. Qualified volunteers are able to practice and lead a 2 hour tour for groups of 10 – 15 people.

ExtensionThe sixth annual Texas Fruit Conference offers Basic Training for New Growers, Pesticide CEU Program for growers needing to keep their pesticide license up to date, and a Disscussion of the Future of Fruit Growing in Texas.

Conference Conveners: Monte Nesbitt, Larry Stein and Jim Kamas from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
