Microplastics in the Galveston Bay Watershed: The Big Impacts of Tiny Pollution @ Lone Star College Kingwood

Lone Star College – Kingwood celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day with a special lecture called “Microplastics in the Galveston Bay Watershed: The Big Impacts of Tiny Pollution” presented by Theresa Morris, Gulf Program Coordinator, Turtle Island Restoration Network-Gulf of Mexico. The event is being held at Lone Star College – Kingwood, 20000 Kingwood Drive, on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm in CLA 112. Following the lecture is the LSC-Kingwood Seed Library Opening: Share Seeds for Food Sustainability. It is being held in the Learning Commons Building at 1:30 pm.  Please feel free to donate vegetable garden seeds for the new seed library. ​

ForesTREE Teacher Workshop @ Kirbyville, Texas

Pre K- 8 grade teachers interested in learning about forest ecosystems, water, wildlife, and conservation education topics in a fun, hands-on professional development program.

Interact with foresters, biologists, educators, and forest industry professionals who care for forest lands and make wood products that we use every day.

Receive Project Learning Tree Pre K-8 educator certification and teacher guide.
Hands-on learning will include resources and activities that you can bring to life in your
classroom or school yard through citizen science, STEM, career exploration, and field study. 14 hours SBEC CPE and TEEAC credit.

Day 1: E.O. Siecke State Forest (Call, TX near Kirbyville) – 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
– Learn about Texas forest ecosystems, habitat management, forest hydrology, fire ecology and animal and plant functions and structures, nature journals, water cycles, and more.
– Receive training in Project Learning Tree’s interdisciplinary environmental education curriculum.
Day 2: E.O. Siecke State Forest (Call, TX near Kirbyville), meet and begin tours – 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
– Tree Life Cycle field sites: tour a working forest, a timber operation, and WestRock paper mill.

HPARD’s Greenhouse Workday @ Memorial Park Greenhouse

Volunteers meet the second and fourth Thursday of every month to propagate plants from locally collected native seed. A typical workday may include seeding pots, bumping up trays into 1-gallon containers, separating seedlings, and weeding pots. They will also have special seed collecting trips, invasive species removal workdays, and planting events in restored prairies.

KPC Greenhouse Volunteers @ Memorial Park Conservancy Greenhouse

The Memorial Park Conservancy has generously offered Katy Prairie Conservancy use of their greenhouse while the Native Seed Nursery at KPC’s field office in Waller is being renovated. Volunteers will help grow plants that will be used for various Katy Prairie Conservancy spring projects and for the Great Grow Out. The Memorial Park Conservancy Greenhouse is located in Memorial Park on the south side of Memorial Drive. All are welcome, no experience necessary.

Workdays are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
