Plogging! @ Galveston Island State Park

They are  hosting a quick Plogging( jogging and picking up plastic as you go) session at the Day Use Beach for a short 1/2 mile jog (or more….) to rid the beach of trash and warm up for the long summer days. Hit the beach during the cool morning hours for stretching, jogging, lifting, and bending.

Where: Day use picnic area to begin
Who: Park Ranger Lisa Reznicek is inviting everyone to join

Before you can join us:
• Park entry fee paid before trip (park permit on vehicle, received at front office or self-pay booth)
• All children must be accompanied by an adult

What to expect:
• Family fun for all ages.
• Prepared for physical activity: light jogging, bending, lifting, and stretching
• Small group instruction and guide
• Beach conservation and debris information on a short jog
• Restrooms available
• Camera-worthy shots of a great Texas beach

Mason Park Bridge Grand Opening @ Mason Park

The Mason Park Bridge Grand Opening is a fun, free family event celebrating the opening of the Mason Park Bridge across Brays Bayou. To celebrate the new 485ft-long, 16ft-wide pedestrian/bike suspension bridge, Houstonians are invited to participate in a free 5K walk/run at 8 a.m. and join the “Picnic in the Park” that follows starting at 10 a.m.

A part of Bayou Greenways 2020, this exciting event will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Come to celebrate Houston’s newest signature bridge along the bayou connecting communities in the East End.

8:00 a.m. 5k Fun Run, participants are encouraged to register in advance.
10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Picnic in the Park with live music and family-and-kid games and activities, then Official Ribbon Cutting from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. with Mayor Sylvester Turner and other notable guests

UH Energy is gearing up for its 6th Annual Energy Symposium Series – Critical Issues in Energy. The first symposium, Future of the Electric Grid: Renewed or Gridlocked a panel of experts will discuss the future of the electric grid. With the increasing adoption of distributed renewable energy resources, the potential electrification of the transportation sector and the recent cyber challenges faced by the grid, there has been increased focus on the stability of the current electric grid and how it will evolve in the future. Moreover, how this resilience and eventual transformation will be financed and regulated remain matters of significant uncertainty. Register on Eventbrite.

Flooding and the Future of Houston and Documenting Harvey

For the first half of the program, Jim Blackburn, co-director of the Severe Storm Prevention, Education, and Evacuation from Disaster (SPEED) Center at Rice University and director of the Bayou City Initiative, and Dr. Stephen Klineberg, founding director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, will discuss flooding and the future of Houston.

This will be the first public conversation between Blackburn, who specializes in sustainable development, environmental law, and civil and environmental engineering, and Dr. Klineberg, urban and environmental sociology expert.

For the second half, Wendy Watriss, award-winning social and political photojournalist, will lead a discussion about documenting major traumatic events from the photographer’s perspective. Watriss is joined by Houston Chronicle photojournalists Elizabeth Conley, Brett Coomer, Melissa Phillip, and Godofredo Vasquez, all of whom were on the front lines of documenting Hurricane Harvey.

The event is free. Registration is required.

15th Annual Run in the Park @ Molly Ann Smith Plaza

The Conservancy’s 15th Annual Run in the Park offers a 5K run, a 3K walk and a 1K Kids’ Run. Runners and joggers wind through a scenic course below the Park’s historic live oak canopy. The run begins and ends at Molly Ann Smith Plaza near the Jones Reflection Pool where family and friends cheer on participants. A Post-Race Party will feature food, drinks, music and more!
