In this class you will learn to identify hawks, from the small American Kestrel to the majestic Bald Eagle, and you will learn how and why hawks migrate. Houston is located along a major flyway: you will take advantage of this by spending time in the field practicing identifying hawks in flight as they pass through on their way from their breeding grounds in Northern Canada and Alaska to their wintering grounds in Central and South America.

Comes with a field trip for Saturday, Septemeber 22, 7:30am-4:00pm

Information Session on NCCER Core Curriculum Certification Training @ Houston Area Urban League

Participants will receive free training and support services including basic safety – OSHA 10, introduction to hand & power tools, introduction to construction math, and much more. The NCCER Core Curriculum is a prerequisite to all other Level 1 craft curriculum. Completing this curriculum gives you the basic skills needed to continue education in any craft area you chooses.

Requirements:

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Able to commit full time for 2 weeks
  • Must have HS Diploma/GED
  • Motivated to Learn
  • Drug and background screening
  • Valid TX Drivers License

To start the enrollment process, attend an Information Session on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Limited slots available.

Educators Night Out – Spotlighting: Texas Wildlife @ Houston Zoo

What do Houston toads, Attwater’s prairie chickens, and black bears have in common?  They are all part of our diverse Texas wildlife and the Zoo works with other organizations to help save them in the wild. Come enjoy a night out at the Houston Zoo just for Educators!  This one of a kind evening will feature ambassador animals, new STEAM activities, a special keeper chat and much more.  Earn 3 CPE hours while enjoying a night out just for you.  Light appetizers and drinks will be provided. Are You Sure of Your Shorebirds? presented by Kristine Rivers of Birding for Fun

The Galveston County Audubon Group (GCAG) of the Houston Audubon Society hold monthly meetings jointly with the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council (GINTC). The meetings are held in the Wortham Auditorium on the first floor at the Rosenberg Library, 7 – 8 p.m. They welcome guests to come early at 6:30 p.m. to visit with other birders about their recent outings and sightings before the meeting. Membership is free and meetings and field trips are open to the public. Membership in Houston Audubon Society is encouraged but is not required.

East End Field Trip: Saturday, October 20: 8:30 a.m. – Noon

Meet at the east end of the Galveston seawall.
