Hit the Hill with Nature Heritage Society for a fun and exhilarating hike. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. It’s a family affair. The Trail is approximately 2.5 miles; shorter routes are available. Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m., and the hike will follow shortly after at 9.

Learn about the animals of Armand Bayou and the habitats they live in. Demonstrations vary from week to week: mammals, birds and reptiles.

The Jones-Bender, Judy Overby Bell and Spring Creek Greenway trails are open for bicycling. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

All Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center programs and events are free of charge unless otherwise noted and open to the public regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, physical ability, national origin, or religion. Anyone requiring special assistance to participate in these programs should contact the nature center. Programs meet at the Nature Center unless otherwise noted. Solid shoes are recommended. Encourage your child’s curiosity about nature and spend time with them exploring outdoors! Children 18 months to 3 years, with their adult companions, can join a naturalist for a story reading, a simple nature activity or craft, and a stroller-friendly hike on the beautiful Arboretum trails. Enjoy an interesting new nature experience each week with themes such as turtles, armadillos, spiders, and trees.

Please dress for weather. Tyke Hikes take place rain or shine. Closed-toe shoes are best for trail hikes. Older preschoolers are welcome but are the responsibility of the adult companion.

A different three-week science unit is taught each month, with classes consisting of instructional time, hands-on activities, and outdoor activities. Extension ideas will be provided to parents so they can follow up with lessons and activities at home. Visit houstonarboretum.org for the class schedule.

Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) is partnering with Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) to install the first 9 Natives Showcase Garden. The 9 Natives Showcase Garden will be located near the HMNS Cockrell Butterfly Center and in close proxmity to the METRORail line on San Jacinto Street. This “showcase garden,” featuring nine Texas native plants, will demonstrate how individuals can incorporate native plants in their own gardens or yards in the Houston area. Volunteers interested in assisting with the 9 Natives Showcase Garden installation are welcome to attend the event, as well as those who wish to observe how to create a garden with native plants. The address for HMNS is 5555 Hermann Park Dr. Look for KPC and Garden Club of Houston representatives near the Cockrell Butterfly Center in proximity to San Jacinto Street.

Environment Protectors Initiating Change (E.P.I.C)

E.P.I.C. is a free service learning club for high school teens that is aimed at learning about, and solving coastal environmental problems through hands-on projects.
