Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival @ Nature Discovery Center

The Nature Discovery Center’s Pumpkin Patch fall festival returns to Russ Pitman Park this fall. Come to enjoy their refreshed, updated park, where your family can pick out the perfect pumpkins for your porch; take a horse-drawn wagon ride; browse vendor stalls; bounce, spin, and climb big attractions; and play plenty of festival games. Don’t forget to also stop by the food trucks for some scrumptious eats.

Admission to Pumpkin Patch is FREE. Cost of games, activities, food, drinks, and more will vary.

Harvest Gathering/ Creation Fall Festival @ Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church

Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to the 2018 Creation Care Fest – Environmental Extravaganza. This free event has fun and educational environmental activities for all ages such as pumpkin decorating and lectures by experts on major environmental issues. Exhibits by local environmental nonprofits will offer more opportunities to learn and engage.

Parking is available for $1 at the Rice University lot across the street from the church. Metro bus stops for lines 27 & 41 are nearby. Bike parking is available in the church lot.

Visitors can also pick and comb cotton, use natural plant dyes to make your own bandana, make candles as an early Texan did, watch a woodworker use human-powered equipment, and test your early Texas knowledge to identify hand tools and archeological finds. Come celebrate the diversity of regional bird species as evidenced by Audubon’s CEC, create active involvement in science and art, and encourage awareness and stewardship of the Matagorda Bay ecosystem. Matagorda Bay Birdfest is one of the only bird festivals with a bird parade for 3 years in a row. There will be an art contest, photography contest, birding and kayak tours, and a concert and awards ceremony.

“Reflecting on Practice” coaching workshop @ Houston Zoo

Reflecting on Practice is a professional learning program that immerses novice and experienced science educators in informal environments in discussions about, reflections on, and applications of research and theory in learning and teaching science. The ideas and tasks in the program create and strengthen a shared knowledge base and professional language among educators within an institution. It makes public the practices of all educators through greater understanding of, and reflections on, their beliefs, goals, and actions.
