Join Citizens’ Environmental Coalition as they visit the Hannah and Arthur Ginsbarg Nature Discovery Center in Bellaire. There will be a guided tour outside and a chance to view major renovations that were completed recently. They will visit the pocket priarie, deciduous woodlands, prairie wetland, and cypress pond in Russ Pitman Park; nature play area; and Critter Classroom. On the tour, you will learn about environmental education initiatives at a mainstay of environmental education inside the loop. The last part of the meeting is our traditional EEE Round-table Forum where members and attendees introduce themselves, their programs, make announcements and discuss challenges and successes in environmental education.
The 2018 Southeast Mobility Plan is the City of Houston’s multi-modal mobility study (inclusive of vehicular, transit, pedestrian, bicycle and freight) in the area bounded by Interstate 610 to the north, State Highway 288 to the west, Sam Houston Toll Road to the south, and Interstate 45 and Galveston Road to the east.
Please attend the Southeast Houston Mobility Plan meeting. The City of Houston wants your feedback on plan draft recommendations to improve how you get to work, school and other key destinations in your community. The meeting is kid-friendly, and refreshments will be provided.
Habitat Restoration
Our volunteer group meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon at the HPARD Greenhouse.
We propagate plants from locally collected native seed. A typical workday may include seeding pots, bumping up trays into 1-gallon containers, separating seedlings, and weeding pots. We will also have special seed collecting trips, invasive species removal workdays, and planting events in our restored prairies!
We are also beginning to conduct semi-annual vegetation transects and monthly bird surveys at our current and future restoration sites. If you’re good at identifying plants or birds or if you would like to learn more about them, come join us!
If you’re interested in volunteering for the NRMP, email kelli.ondracek@houstontx.gov.
The Memorial Park Conservancy has generously offered Katy Prairie Conservancy use of their greenhouse while the Native Seed Nursery at KPC’s field office in Waller is being renovated. Volunteers will help grow plants that will be used for various Katy Prairie Conservancy spring projects and for the Great Grow Out. The Memorial Park Conservancy Greenhouse is located in Memorial Park on the south side of Memorial Drive. All are welcome, no experience necessary.
Workdays are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
Learn what’s next for the 2045 Regional Transportation Plan at one of their upcoming public meetings. They will highlight an expert panel featuring “Transportation 101: What You Need to Know.” During the public meetings, expert transportation panelists will discuss future transportation projects in your area selected from the recent “2018 Call for Projects” application process. The panel will also talk about air quality and transportation conformity, transportation performance measures, regional resiliency efforts, and when the 2045 RTP draft plan will be unveiled. H-GAC will be collecting public comments about the “2018 Call for Projects†selection; the draft plan of the 2045 RTP; and, transportation conformity.
Come give the Hermann Park Conservancy your ideas and feedback on the Commons at Hermann Park. The Commons is an exciting new addition located at the corner of Cambridge and Fannin Streets that will include a unique play area and plenty of gathering space for all Houstonians. Their goal for every project is to get feedback from those who use the Park the most:Â you.
The meeting is free and open to the public. No registration necessary.
Workdays are held once a month, October through March on the second Saturday of the month. We start work around 8:30 AM and work until about noon, when we break for lunch, provided by Houston Audubon and prepared by the lunch crew. Lunch at the picnic area of Boy Scout Woods is a good chance to visit with other volunteers and recharge from a morning of exercise and work. After lunch, we take about an hour to tie up any loose ends and clean up.
Come be a part of sanctuary maintenance, habitat restoration, and Houston Audubon’s amazing volunteer workforce. Email Pete Deichmann at pdeichmann@houstonaudubon.org for more information or to be put on the email list.
