Flooding and the Future of Houston and Documenting Harvey

For the first half of the program, Jim Blackburn, co-director of the Severe Storm Prevention, Education, and Evacuation from Disaster (SPEED) Center at Rice University and director of the Bayou City Initiative, and Dr. Stephen Klineberg, founding director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, will discuss flooding and the future of Houston.

This will be the first public conversation between Blackburn, who specializes in sustainable development, environmental law, and civil and environmental engineering, and Dr. Klineberg, urban and environmental sociology expert.

For the second half, Wendy Watriss, award-winning social and political photojournalist, will lead a discussion about documenting major traumatic events from the photographer’s perspective. Watriss is joined by Houston Chronicle photojournalists Elizabeth Conley, Brett Coomer, Melissa Phillip, and Godofredo Vasquez, all of whom were on the front lines of documenting Hurricane Harvey.

The event is free. Registration is required.

The catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Harvey a year ago has sparked renewed interest in how to mitigate the adverse impacts of flooding from both rainfall and tidal events in Texas and across the United States. This talk traces the causes, consequences, and policy implications of flood losses from Harvey and other flood events in the United States.

Bayou Preservation Association’s 15th Annual Symposium @ The United Way of Greater Houston

 Bayou Preservation Association’s 15th Annual Symposium, “Staying Awake after the Harvey Wake-up Call”

The Symposium will highlight how the Bayou Preservation Association is faring since Harvey and how they plan to respond going forward to minimize similar impacts.

The Association is pleased to announce that, amongst several other speakers, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett will open the Symposium; Harris County Engineer John Blount is confirmed to speak; and Eric Berger, a Houston-based meteorologist with Space City Weather.org, will provide the keynote address, “What’s Up with the Weather”. The Galveston County Audubon Group (GCAG) of the Houston Audubon Society hold monthly meetings jointly with the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council (GINTC). The meetings are held in the Wortham Auditorium on the first floor at the Rosenberg Library, 7 – 8 p.m. They welcome guests to come early at 6:30 p.m. to visit with other birders about their recent outings and sightings before the meeting. Membership is free and meetings and field trips are open to the public. Membership in Houston Audubon Society is encouraged but is not required.

East End Field Trip: Saturday, October 20: 8:30 a.m. – Noon

Presenters will share their experiences and photos. Dennis (a former blonde) was recently in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. BeaAnn will talk about her trip to Kenya. Kendra visited South Africa during her 2014 quest to see 1000 species of birds in a year.
