Sparrow Identification Workshop

Dr. Cin-Ty Lee has volunteered to teach a bird identification workshop as a fundraiser to help support birding programs at the Nature Discovery Center. All proceeds will go directly to NatureDiscovery Center programs. Dr. Lee’s workshop will feature a one evening sparrow identification lecture, followed by an all-day field trip to several places in the greater Houston area to look for some of our over-wintering sparrows.


Workshop Dates

Lecture: Wednesday, January 31 at 7 pm at the Nature Discovery Center, 7112 Newcastle, Bellaire, TX 77401

Field Trip: Saturday, February 3 at 7 am and continue through lunchtime, with the possibility of going longer if people want to keep birding. Car-pooling is recommended. Specific birding locations will be selected by Dr. Lee closer to the date of the field trip.


Cost: $65 – NDC members; $90 – non-members

Advanced registration required. Register online at my-ndc.org/activities/sparrows/  Class size is limited to 15 participants.

What to Bring & Wear: Lots of water & drinks, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, binoculars and bird books. Layered clothing, hat, closed-toed shoes.

Project Wild Workshop @ St. Luke's Hospital - The Vintage

Project WILD invites you to explore and share the fascinating world of wildlife and ecosystems using fun, hands-on educational activities. You will  experience engaging TEKS-aligned activities while networking with other educators.

Workshop participants receive:

  • 6 hours TEA-approved CPE and TEEAC Credit
  • Project WILD K-12 guide
  • Texas-specific resources

Anyone who works with children, including teachers, homeschoolers, informal educators and scout leaders, is welcome. The workshop will take place in the administrative conference rooms – look for signs to the room. Bring a lunch and wear comfortable shoes and clothing. In order to provide morning snacks, an optional contribution of $5 will be collected at the door.

Urban Harvest’s Starting a Community or School Garden Workshop @ University of St. Thomas, Room TBD

There are many reasons for starting a community garden: creating a strong sense of community and stewardship; developing a community’s identity and spirit; providing a space for communities to grow safe, nutritious food; empowering communities with the knowledge to grow their own food and offering education and support to manage the food they grow and their own health. In this 4-hour comprehensive workshop, the presenters will take you through the process of building community, setting goals and exploring funding options, to the nuts and bolts of creating the garden and helping to ensure its sustainability. Morning snacks and drinks will be provided – please bring your own sack lunch. The last portion of the class will include a tour of Plant It Forward Farm located near the campus. PLEASE NOTE: Registration is from 8:30 -8:45. Workshop to start at 8:45. There are no refunds on classes.

Parking is available in Moran Garage (campus map: #26), corner of West Alabama and Graustark Street; there may be a $2 charge. There are parking lots at corner of West Alabama and Yoakum and Branard and Montrose.

IENoH’s Justice Advocacy Workshop @ Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church

The Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston invites you to attend a Justice Advocacy Workshop taught by experts from TX Impact, an Austin-based interfaith justice advocacy organization. The Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston is a Houston affiliate of Texas Interfaith Center for Public Policy, a sister organization of TX Impact. The Justice Advocacy Workshop is FREE and will take place at Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Blvd., as well as online (simultaneously), via web meeting.

Learn how to effectively raise your voice for the voiceless! This training will also cover plans & preparation for advocacy during Faith Climate Action Week in April (April 14 – April 22). The training will be recorded, so if you can’t make it, you can still get a copy of the training recording to review later. Metro bus lines 41 & 27 stop near the church.

Permaculture Class: Food Forest!

Texas Edible Landscapes, in cooperation with Permaculture Education, LLC. is proud to announce a new workshop, co-hosted with international permaculture teacher and designer, David Dornbrack.

This is the second in a series of workshops, designing a community food forest! The workshops will be hosted on the site of the upcoming garden. You and Mr. Dombrack will be designing, building, planting, maintaining and harvesting the exact food forest system where this workshop is hosted. You will also be learning valuable skills on how to create a home orchard in your own backyard!

Come, learn and hang out and make friends with like-minded individuals who also want to learn how to grow their own organic, nutrient dense food with minimal effort and maintenance!

Are you a wannabeekeeper or simply have questions about beekeeping?
Learn the basics of what you need to know to get started keeping bees in your backyard or rooftop. Hear about honey bee biology and behavior and learn what honeybee stewardship entails. The class will focus on sustainable urban beekeeping, including a hands-on demonstration of necessary equipment and information on where and when to purchase supplies. You’ll walk away with the resources and knowledge you’ll need to decide whether to pursue this sweet, rewarding hobby!

If the weather permits, we can look inside a hive – so bring a suit if you have one! If not, one can be provided. Also, please wear closed-toe shoes and refrain from using scented clothing or beauty/hair products.

“Noise-forms” Digital Media and Fabrication Workshop @ Rice University, McGregor Computer Lab, Anderson Hall

Michelle Chang will host a digital media and fabrication workshop “Noise-forms” on March 22 in the McGregor Computer Lab at Anderson Hall.

“Noise-forms” will experiment with the translation of astronomical pictures to three-dimensional physical objects with the use of the Processing application and rapid prototyping machines. Students from all departments are invited to learn methods to engage scientific image analysis with artistic modeling techniques.

Interactive Planning Tools Seminar Series @ H-GAC Training Room, Second Floor

Sleuthing, The Avengers, and Chemistry @ Burdine Hall

Discover how superheroes like the Avengers use chemistry to keep villains in check and save the world, and how forensic chemistry can help real-life crime fighters. Join Dr. Burks as she shares her experiences, from working in a crime lab to being a professor and TV personality, all while developing research tools for chemical sleuthing.
We encourage attendees to dress up as their favorite superhero and join us at this family friendly event. We ask that costumes do NOT include facsimiles of weapons (including toys or props).
Dr. Raychelle Burks is a professor at St. Edwards University who enjoys the challenge of developing methods for detecting a variety of materials, including illegal drugs and explosives. She designs portable sensors, including those that work in your smart phone, that can make chemical measurements in the field. She helped create and organize SciPop Talks!, a popular talk series blending science and pop culture. Dr. Burks is a popular science communicator, appearing on the Science Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science, American Chemical Society’s Reactions videos, Royal Society of Chemistry podcasts, and at conventions such as DragonCon and GeekGirlCon.
Directions and Parking
The talk takes place in Burdine Hall, Room 106 located at 2505 University Avenue. Hot Science – Cool Talks attendees may park at the 27th Street Garage (TSG) located at 109 W. 27th St. at the discounted rate of $4. Only if you park at this garage will you receive the discount. Please bring your parking ticket with you to the event. Parking staff will sell discounted parking passes from 5:30-7:15 p.m. Only debit and credit cards are accepted. There will not be PTS staff at the garage.
From parking garage to event venue: Exit the garage on Wichita St. Walk south on Wichita St, crossing Dean Keeton St, and entering the Burdine Courtyard through the archway next to the Biomedical Engineering Building. See a map here.
Check-in
All talk attendees are required to have a ticket to attend the talk. Check-in is available at 5:30 p.m. or no later than 6:50 p.m. in the hallways outside of Room 106 in Burdine Hall. Please bring your Eventbrite ticket (printed or email) to check-in. We ask that everyone is seated by 6:50 p.m. or you may lose your seat. We expect the talk and its Q & A session will end by 8:15 p.m. though ending times may vary depending on the speaker.

Cool Activities
Explore the evening’s topic through hands-on activities and information from 5:30 – 6:40 p.m. Closer to the event date, we will share a list of organizations participating in Cool Activities.
