Our first goal in reversing global warming is drawdown. This is the point where the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere levels off and begins to decline. If we get moving, we could reach drawdown by 2050. At this event co-sponsored by Green Building Resource Center and Houston Climate Protection Alliance, the Climate Action Team of First Unitarian Universalist Church will summarize the book, Drawdown, then break into groups to focus on particular solutions: organic farming and land use, family planning, refrigerant management, or your favorite action issue.

CHASING CORAL: AN EXPOSURE LABS PRODUCTION
Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world.
Join us to watch this engaging film then discuss the topics with Emma Hickerson and Kelly Drinnen from Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, home to Texas’ coral reefs.

A public meeting of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council’s Boundary Expansion Working Group that was originally scheduled for Thursday, January 11 has been moved to Thursday, January 25, 2018 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the sanctuary offices located at 4700 Avenue U, Building 216, Galveston. Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) members of this working group will be meeting to review and discuss the sanctuary’s proposal for boundary expansion as detailed in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Public comment will be accepted.
Levy Park Conservancy presents Beauty and the Beast for Movie Night, sponsored by Texas Children’s Hospital.
Come on out for some post-holiday fun to see the family-friendly 2017 movie Beauty and the Beast in conjunction with the Levy Park Conservancy. Beauty and the Beast is an adaptation of the classic fairy tale about a monstrous-looking prince and a young woman who fall in love, starring Emma Watson of Harry Potter movie fame. The Texas Children’s Hospital-sponsored Movie Night is on the last Friday of each month.
Guests can enjoy food and beverage service from the The Purple Flour food truck, available from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. Choose from a variety of delicious pizzas with many different toppings, as well as tempting cake pops for dessert.

Exciting improvements are coming to the corner of Fannin and Cambridge Streets to be known as the Hermann Park Family Commons. Join the Hermann Park Conservancy for a fun day in the park, where you can learn about the development of and provide feedback to renovations in this area of the park.
Conservancy staff will be on hand to share preliminary ideas for the Hermann Park Family Commons and take your questions and feedback. Food trucks and family-friendly activities will also be present. You are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy with your friends and family.
The Hermann Park Family Commons is located at the intersection of Fannin and Cambridge Streets, near the Buddy Carruth Playground for All Children and the Fannin Picnic Pavilion. This event is free and open to the public. Concessions will be available for purchase. Free parking is available in Parking Lot S, located next to Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church. Property Assessed Clean Energy, or PACE, is not yet an everyday term, but it is gaining traction in Houston. Texas PACE enables property owners to finance 100% of their energy saving, water conservation, and distributed generation improvements with little to no capital outlay. PACE enables commercial property owners to lower their operating costs, increase net operating income and the quality of the asset as the idea is what you save in utilities will be greater than your payments. Â A voluntary land-secured assessment that is paid off over time, often up to 20 years or more, the City enabled PACE as a way to incentivize sustainability and resilience upgrades to commercial, industrial and multifamily properties. Partnering with US Green Building Council, PACE: Liftoff in Houston is a free education seminar, open to the public.
It will take place on Feb. 28, 2018 6:00-8:00pm at the Green Building Resource Center. The panel will be discussing the first few successful PACE projects in Houston. CEU’s available.
