Save the Date: Big Thicket Carnivorous Plants Field Trip
Title: Save the Date: Big Thicket Carnivorous Plants Field Trip
Description: The Big Thicket has been called “America’s Ark†and is one of the most biodiverse areas in North America. The 83,000 acre preserve in the East Texas piney woods is the biological crossroads of four distinct ecosystems – southeastern swamps, eastern forests, central plains, and southwest deserts all converge here. There are 85 tree species, more than 60 shrubs, and nearly 1,000 other flowering plants, including 26 ferns and allies, 20 orchids, and four of North America’s five types of insect-eating plants.
Our full-day trip will include walks to look for the four species of carnivorous plants found nowhere else in Texas: pitcher plant, bladderwort, butterwort, and sundew. In addition to discovering orchids and other flowering plants, we’ll visit and discuss several of the 11 distinct plant associations which make up this diverse area. There will be ample time for photography and birdwatching in addition to our plant forays. Bring a sack lunch – all transportation provided.
