Description: This workshop is designed to give educators first hand knowledge and
experience of the role science and technology play in managing and protecting our natural resources, such as those found in Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.
Tuition: $125 – includes lunch each day, breakfast and dinner on Wed,
backpack of workshop materials & classroom resources (Lodging is NOT provided.)
Format: 3 days on land; 2 days on board R/V Manta (sanctuary research vessel) using a combination of presentations, student-directed explorations, demonstrations, group discussions, classroom activities, field exercises.
Topics covered:
• Introduction to Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary
• Basic coral structure and biology
• Science investigations currently being conducted in the sanctuary
• Phytoplankton & Harmful Algal Bloom monitoring
• Water quality testing
• Technology: remotely operated vehicle (ROV), water samplers & test probes, microscopes, plankton nets (hand & vessel tow)
