EPA Public Comment: Nat’l Ambient Air Quality Standards for Ozone

Title: EPA Public Comment: Nat’l Ambient Air Quality Standards for Ozone
Location: Hilton Houston Hobby Airport’s Moody Ballroom (located on the ground floor): 8181 Airport Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77061
Description: The American Lung Association asks that you familiarize yourself with the proposed new standards for ambient air quality standard for ozone.

If you would like to present oral testimony at the hearings, please notify Ms. Tricia Crabtree: crabtree.tricia@epa.gov. She will arrange a general time slot for you to speak.

The public hearings will begin each day at 9:30 a.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m. or later, if necessary, depending on the number of speakers wishing to participate. The EPA is scheduling a lunch break from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m.

The ALA writes:
“the EPA announced that they will consider lowering the range of the ozone smog National Ambient Air Quality Standard that officially “limits” how much ozone is allowed to be in the air. The Clean Air Act requires that EPA set the standard where it protects the health of children, senior citizens, and people with lung diseases like asthma. We support EPA’s step to add more protection to our community from this dangerous pollutant by lowering the current inadequate standard of 75 ppb to proposed a range of 60 to 70 parts per billion (0.060-0.070 parts per million). The American Lung Association and other medical and public health officials recommend that EPA set a final standard of 60 ppb to protect public health.

“The next steps are public hearings to provide interested parties the opportunity to present data, views, or arguments concerning the proposed rules. EPA will make a final decision on the standard in August 2010. The American Lung Association will be there to urge adoption of an ozone standard that follows the science and the law. The final ozone smog standard is too critical to the health of millions to do otherwise.”
