ENJOY THE WEATHER

By Ella Tyler

Oh the weather up north is frightful,
But down here it’s so delightful,
And there’s plenty of places to go,
Who needs snow?
Who needs snow?
Who needs snow?

Take an excursion – Take the Metrorail downtown. Ride the train at Hermann Park. Check out the ice skating at Discovery Green. Or venture out to Mercer Arboretum or Jesse Jones Park.

The Houston Farmers Market is at the parking lot south of Rice Stadium on Tuesdays. Winter hours are 3:30 to 6:30 pm. For a list of what they will have this week, go online.

The Houston Arboretum is a great place to walk, and SHOP. The gift shop is open Tuesday, December 23.

There are at least ten Christmas Bird Counts in this area left in this season. Go here for a list.

Or, if you think that you should have “people” to do your outside activities this time of year, consider sponsoring Bob and Maggie Honig, stalwart Katy Prairie Conservancy volunteers, who are going to do a bird-a-thon on the Warren Ranch on December 25 or 26 (weather permitting). Supporters are pledging an amount per species (or a flat amount) in the hope that it will spur Bob and Maggie to see as many species as possible in a 24-hour period. For details, call Mary Anne Piacentini at (713)523-6135

And, here’s the obligatory “Green Christmas” story for you.
