  1. Transforming Houston’s Concrete Bayous Into 160-Mile Greenspace (Laurie Johnson – KUHF News, 6/26/2013)
A $205 million dollar makeover of Houston’s bayous is about to start thanks to an agreement between the City of Houston and the nonprofit Houston Parks Board. Voters approved the Bayou Greenways project in the 2012 bond election and this week city council formalized the agreement. The Bayou Greenways project will create about 160 miles of interconnected hike and bike trails and park spaces along the city’s nine bayous.

  2. Seafood consumption advisory on spotted sea trout removed for most of Galveston Bay (The Bay Area Citizen, 7/1/2013)
The Galveston Bay Foundation (“GBF”) celebrates the removal of the seafood consumption advisory on spotted sea trout (speckled trout) for most of the Galveston Bay system, including a portion of Upper Galveston Bay and all of Trinity, Lower Galveston, East, West, Chocolate, Drum, Bastrop, and Christmas bays. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, testing of the speckled trout samples indicated that concentrations of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), both of which are groups of toxic compounds, had decreased to acceptable levels and no longer pose a significant health risk. This latest testing is a snapshot in time and there is still much work to be done to further reduce risks from the consumption of seafood in areas of the bay system, most notably the upper portion of Upper Galveston Bay, the Houston Ship Channel, and the San Jacinto River.

  3. Third pedestrian bridge installed at Buffalo Bayou Park (Houston Chronicle, 6/28/2013)
The third and final bridge span for the Jackson Hill Street Pedestrian Bridge was installed on Thursday at Buffalo Bayou Park, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership reports. The 345-foot bayou-spanning bridge connects trails on the north bank to the Allen Parkway side of the bayou. The Jackson Hill Bridge will provide a route for cyclists and pedestrians to cross over Buffalo Bayou.
