BIRD COUNT CONTINUES UNTIL JANUARY 5

The National Audubon Society’s 108th annual Christmas Bird Count gets under way Dec. 14. About 60,000 volunteers will participate in the extraordinary citizen-science effort to count bird populations across the three continents of the Western Hemisphere. Counts are conducted in circles that are 15 miles in diameter – this year there are expected to be more than 2,000 count circles. The greater Houston area will have about 30 counts, including a new one – the first official San Jacinto Wilderness Bird Count on Saturday, January 5. Teams are now being formed to bird Lake Houston Park, Damuth Preserve, and the Daytown Prairie via kayak/canoe. There is also an owl search team. If you are interested in being a team captain or joining any of the teams, please respond to David Henderson at . Teams will meet at 7 am at Brookshire Brothers in New Caney. For a list of all counts in Texas, go to Houston Audubon’s website.
