SIERRA CLUB WILDERNESS MEETING
The Sierra Club invites you come to the Upper Kirby 1st floor meeting room, 3015 Richmond, on Wednesday, August 8 at 7 pm to discuss the proposed Upland Island Wilderness Management Plan with Ian McWhorter of the U.S. Forest Service. The proposed plan will become the model for managing other wilderness areas in Texas, and the Sierra Club wants you to help them get it right! The 13,331-acre Upland Island Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area within the Angelina National Forest, located in East Texas southeast of Lufkin. It was officially authorized under the Texas Wilderness Act of 1984. Since 1984, these areas have been managed to remain natural, pristine, and provide opportunities for solitude and challenge. This presentation is an opportunity to learn about the future of wilderness in east Texas, and issues pertaining to managing wilderness characteristics. One issue of particular concern is the management of wildfire and any proposed prescribed burns. A dditional information is available online. Admission is free, and anyone with questions should call Brandt Mannchen at (713) 664-5962 or Evelyn Merz at (713) 644-8228.
