Delores Fenwick Nature Center seeks Part-Time Nature Education Instructor
Job Summary
The purpose of this class within the organization is to lead the day-to-day instruction of the Day Camp Program at the Delores Fenwick Nature Center for the Parks and Recreation Department. Deliver educational lessons and program activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. Assist in the management of the overall camp operation at the direction of the Natural Resources Division.
This class works under close general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Essential Functions
- Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
- Utilize background knowledge of biology, nature, and environmental science topics to deliver curriculum; includes teaching lessons and activities and ensuring that campers are meeting camp goals and learning educational materials.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to work with children in a camp atmosphere.
- Exercise effective communication with parents and staff.
- Manage camp classroom, ensuring lesson plans, activities, materials, and daily schedules are prepared and implemented to meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
- Maintain attendance records and daily rosters; check campers in and out of camp daily.
- Manage classroom environment, including camper behavior and health/wellbeing.
- Lead and guide Camp Counselors during camp program activities.
- Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs.
Additional Duties
- Communicate daily happenings with parents during camper check-in and check-out; including behavior issues, first aid incidents, reminders, and other information.
- Enforce camp rules and behavior policies; includes communicating camper issues with supervisors and parents.
- Plan and implement daily activity schedule from provided list of materials.
- Arrange, set-up, and/or break-down equipment, supplies, chairs, and tables in designated rooms or other areas for scheduled, games and programs.
- Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
- Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires some college (at least 20 hours), with field of study in Education or the Natural Sciences preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in dealing with children ages 6-14 in a non-parental, but supervisory role such as a teacher, counselor, or camp director preferred.
- Previous teaching/instructing experience strongly recommended.
- Requires some experience or knowledge of science, relating to biology, environmental science, or nature education.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Valid, Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
- Current certification in First Aid and CPR, or the ability to obtain within two (2) months of hire date.
