Houston Environmental News Update March 14, 2018
- Houston Audubon Birdathon, through May 15, 2018.
- In April, the Galveston Nature Tourism Council hosts one of the world’s premier birding events: Galveston FeatherFest. Many of these event sell out early, so sign up soon.
- Bird banding with Gulf Coast Bird Observatory (the next monthly event is on Saturday–look for me there!). GCBO also has extensive research programs, educational programs, and an upcoming spring experience auction.
- In addition to regular kayak art adventures and volunteer conservation opportunities, Artist Boat‘s founder, Karla Klay, offers occasional but excellent birding tours in Galveston and Bolivar.
- Texas Wildlife Association offers many bird-themed programs for educators.
- TWRC Wildlife Center rehabs native birds at their facility, then the birds graduate to home rehabber to get them ready for release.
- Wildlife Center of Houston also rehabs birds and native wildlife and periodically offers an oiled wildlife response program.
- Katy Prairie Conservancy has great wildlife viewing opportunities, and check out their bird checklist). This week, for St. Patrick’s Day, they’ll be offering green drinks at their star viewing party.
- The motherlode of birding opportunities might be the listing on the Ornithology Group’s website. The Ornithology Group of the Outdoor Nature Club–which has been around so long that it makes CEC (at 46 years) look like a spring chicken–has monthly meetings and great outings this spring.
- Speaking of spring chickens… The Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge hosts monthly van tours of the refuge (next on April 7) and the annual Booming N Blooming (spring) Prairie Chicken Festival on April 14 and 15, 2018. Unfortunately, only a few birds at the preserve survived Harvey, making the chicken perhaps the most endangered bird species in North America.
- Of course, you can always observe birds in you own neighborhood. At this time of year, warblers are fun to find, but hard to identify. One of my neighbors in the White Oak Bayou watershed, is supplementing her Bayou City Birding ‘Zines with a series of warbler identification flashcards. In addition to her warbler flashcards, Wendy Wright recently captured–on film–a bald eagle hanging out near the intersection of I-10 and I-45 near Woodland Park.
