- Save the Date: Visions for a Greener Houston, March 12, 2013, 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Once again the CEC will be bringing together Houston’s Environmental community for a series of discussions aimed at fostering dialogue, interaction, and strength in numbers in order to identify and set goals to alleviate the pressing issues facing our community. Building on the success of our first summit in February 2012, we will have updates and success stories, compare progress, and discuss hot issues confronting the quality of life in our growing region.
- 2013 State of the Air Luncheon. The 2013 Air Alliance Houston State of the Air Luncheon will take place on February 5, 2013, 11:30am-1pm, at United Way. The keynote speaker, Toby Baker, TCEQ Commissioner, will share his thoughts on the state of the Houston region’s air quality. $30 registration with lunch included. - KPC Wild West Tour: Owl Prowl & Coyote Howl. Join Katy Prairie Conservancy for a winter night on the prairie as participants enter the realm of charismatic nighttime predators. After a short talk and a light dinner, Master Naturalist and Bird Expert, Glenn Olsen, will lead you onto wild KPC preserves searching for signs of great horned owls, barred owls, screech owls, short eared owls, and maybe even the ghostly barn owl as he utters his ear-piercing scream from the treetops! Everyone will also be on the look out for the crafty coyote. Warm beverages will be provided for the trip to keep you toasty as you listen for the eerie sounds of coyotes yipping and watch for owls gliding on silent wings. - Houston Arboretum at Night – Tapas on the Trails. Celebrate a Valentine’s evening with gourmet food and wine on the trails of the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. This very special evening features a romantic walk on our softly lit trails, with stops throughout the forest to dine on delicious courses paired with carefully chosen wines. The evening ends at the Meadow Deck, overlooking our one-acre pond and demonstration meadow, where guests will enjoy sparkling wine, handcrafted desserts, coffee, and the company of a live owl. Tapas on the Trails will take place on February 9, 2013, 5-7pm. Cost: $75 per person for Arboretum members; $85 per person for non-members. Childcare for ages 5 and up at a fee of $10 per child. - Texas Climate Issues. Did climate change help bring about the devastating Texas heat wave of 2011? In February, Texas State Climatologist John Neilsen-Gammon will walk through some of the science behind what has happening with our climate, particularly the 2011 heat wave that continues to impact The Woodlands vegetation and water resources. He will illustrate how researchers use computer models to better understand our climate and its changes. His lecture is part of the Going Green Sustainability Series organized and sponsored by The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. In cooperation with The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department. - Healthy Communities Indicators Symposium 2013. After a year of deep-dive research on the indicators that measure the health of our region, Center for Houston’s Future will present its findings on February 22 at the 2013 Healthy Communities Indicator Symposium, at the George R. Brown Convention Center, hosted by Honorary Chair Dr. John Mendelsohn, along with prominent national and regional experts. - Kayak Certification Courses. Kayak Certification Courses are finally coming back to Galveston Island! Artist Boat is hosting an ACA Level 1 – 3 Coastal Kayaking Course (IDW/ICE) between March 9-13th. These courses are designed to teach participants how to paddle correctly, perform rescues, maneuver kayaks and learn essential kayaking techniques. Upon successful completion participants will have an ACA Instructor Certification and professional kayak training. - Texas Coastal Management Program awards $1.75 million in grants. Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson on Monday announced that $1.75 million in coastal grants awarded through the Texas Coastal Management Program will go to 21 projects. 8 of the 21 projects will be in the CEC gulf coast region, including Geological framework study for Follets Island in Brazoria County; Evaluating Groundwater Inflow and Nutrient Transport for Texas Coastal Embayments, coastwide; Texas Students Coastal Monitoring Program, coastwide; Boater Waste Education Campaign: Communicating Environmental Impact and Facilitating Enforcement, in Galveston Bay (CEC member group Galveston Bay Foundation); Increasing Water Quality and Quantity through Watershed Experiential Education in Texas Estuaries (WaterIQWet) (CEC member group The Artist Boat); Dickinson Bayou Wetland Restoration Project – Phase II Construction; Maximizing the ecological value of coastal wetland restoration: comparisons among restoration techniques (upper coast); and Galveston Bay Seafood Advisory Education Campaign (CEC member group Galveston Bay Foundation). - 2013 OHBA Summit. The Organic Horticulture Benets Alliance (OHBA) hosts their annual OHBA Summit on February 9, 2013. - 2013 Tree Planting Competition. The Houston Area Urban Forestry Council and Harris County Flood Control District are once again sponsoring the Texas Urban Forestry Council’s Regional Tree Planting Competition to be held in conjunction with local Arbor Day celebrations. This event is a regional competition and the 3 fastest planting times will be forwarded to the State as Regional winners where their times will be included in the finals for the State Competition. Each team will consist of 10 planting members and a non-working captain and scoring will be based not only on time, but also on correct hole depth/width, mulching, planting techniques, etc. The Houston Area Urban Forestry Council will be supplying the judges and timers for the event and again, the 3 top times will be sent to the TUFC for consideration in the State Award for best time. - Japhet Creek Restoration/Clean-up. The next Japhet Creek Restoration/Clean-up will take place on February 9th, 8:30am-12pm at 4600 Clinton Dr. Activities at Japhet Creek Linear Park clean-ups include picking up trash, planting native trees and bushes, clearing the pathways of vines and limbs, mulching around trees and in pathways, removing non-native plant species, and other outdoor tasks. Groups of volunteers may be working along the banks and in the waterway. - You and Your Health – Food Health & Chemicals. A 6-session course on health will begin on February 10, 2013, 4:00 to 5:30 PM, at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. The course will take place every Sunday until March 17th. Come learn about a number of areas related to food health, including basic nutrition, food product contents and labeling, food production concerns (toxins, mercury, GMO, hormones, etc.), organic foods, natural medicine and vitamins. The first class will include content from the church’s Earth Ministry program, including nature spirituality, a snapshot of current environmental issues and ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Teaching is Dr. Sandra Solaiman, a full professor and Professor Emeritus at Tuskegee University, Auburn University and Mississippi State University. - Wanted: Coastal Ghost Busters. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is looking for volunteers interested in helping to remove abandoned crab traps — ghostlike killers of marine life — from their haunts along the coast. Starting Feb. 15 and continuing through Feb. 24, all Texas bays will be closed for crabbing. Any traps left in the water will be assumed to be abandoned and considered “litter†under state law. This allows volunteers to legally remove any crab traps they find. - Missouri City Future Parks Projects Online Survey. Preserving Missouri City’s pristine parks and planning for future recreational green spaces is a priority for City Council, citizens and staff. As part of the City’s commitment to parks’ projects, staff is currently reviewing the Parks and Recreation Master Plan to identify areas for growth and development. - Dickinson Bayou Project Among 24 Grants Awarded Nationwide. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has been awarded a $500,000 federal grant from the National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grant Program administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to restore and enhance approximately 27 acres of estuarine intertidal emergent wetlands and tidal channels along the Dickinson Bayou part of the Galveston Bay estuary, a nationally significant ecosystem benefiting invertebrates, fish and wildlife species. The project also will improve water quality and enhance recreational fishing and birding opportunities for the public. National Green Week is an annual event that empowers schools to engage in sustainability focused lessons, projects or activities between February 4 and the end of Earth Month (April). - Houston needs a comprehensive sustainability plan for its future – Opinion (David Crossley and Joe Douglas Webb – Houston Chronicle, 1/25/13) Houston needs a General Plan for the future based on citizens’ vision and values. Now, with City Council set to hear comments on the highly controversial changes to Chapter 42 next week and with a vote expected soon after, there will be an opportunity to begin the process for the city’s first general plan in its history. - Terry Hershey Park project earns award from H-GAC (The Examiner, 1/25/13) The Houston-Galveston Area Council is pleased to announce the Removal of Litter and Invasive Species at Terry Hershey Park project earned an award as part of the 2012 Parks and Natural Areas Award competition. Developed by the Bayou Preservation Association, the Removal of Litter and Invasive Species at Terry Hershey Park project focused on the 15.5 mile long park running parallel to the western stretch of Buffalo Bayou. - Texas Tenth in the Nation for Green Building (Madelyn Herzog – Texas Monthly, 1/26/13) Texas ranked tenth in the nation for the most green building last year, according to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), which assesses states annually according to the amount of their new construction that is certified LEED (for Leadership in Energy and Environment Design). In 2012, Texas had over 36 million square feet. One of Texas’ greatest and greenest building projects from last year is Houston’s L. T. Cunningham Elementary School, which features solar shading devices and roof overhangs to reduce heat gain, building placement that minimizes its footprint on the site, and low flow plumbing fixtures that increase water efficiency. http://www.texasmonthly.com/

- Texas Coastal Watershed Program (TCWP) seeks Graduate Student Intern. This fall the Texas Coastal Watershed Program (TCWP) will be hiring a graduate student intern. TCWP is a program of Texas A&M University that works on projects concerning wetland restoration and wetland education. The program is located in Houston, TX. Graduate students in wetland ecology, wetland restoration and wetland education are encouraged to apply. Interns will assist with several ongoing projects, focusing on the development of an Operations and Maintenance plan for restored wetland habitat at Sheldon Lake State Park. This task is to be completed in cooperation with Texas Park and Wildlife staff. This primary task will involve technical writing, research, numerical analysis, and some field work, and will require solid organization and writing skills. Internship will begin in early January and will conclude by the end of summer term 2013. Compensation is hourly, and the position is 20 hours per week. Employment will be at our office in Houston. The mission of the Armand Bayou Watershed Partnership is to “improve the quality of life in our communities by protecting, enhancing, and restoring the ecological integrity and natural benefits of the Armand Bayou watershed.†The Watershed Director is responsible for the overall administration and management of the Armand Bayou Watershed Partnership, including fundraising/grantwriting and business operations. - Galveston Baykeeper seeks a Baykeeper/Wetland Watch Coordinator. Part time position. Galveston Baykeeper, a member of the global Waterkeeper Alliance, is a grassroots organization committed to preserving and protecting the health of Galveston Bay and its watershed for our children, our economy and our future, through advocacy and education, and enforcement of the Clean Water Act. Galveston Baykeeper is particularly focused on wetlands, but all threats to the aquatic integrity of the Galveston Bay and bayou system are its concern. The Galveston Baykeeper speaks for the Bay, and is the public face of the Galveston Baykeeper organization. The Galveston Baykeeper keeps abreast of threats to the Bay, and works to mobilize citizens in defense of the Bay, through partnerships and direct action. The incumbent of this position will also manage the Wetland Watch program, a citizen-staffed effort to monitor and report unauthorized fill of wetlands in the lower Galveston Bay watershed. The GBK/WWC must have excellent people and organizational skills, as well as a real passion for our Gulf Coast habitat. Experience in water or natural resource areas required. - The Woods Project seeks Club Program Directors. The Woods Project is seeking part-time (approximately 6 hrs/wk) Club Program Instructors to teach one or more of our weekly afterschool club programs for the 2013 spring semester. The right candidate will be an outdoorsperson with experience working with high school youth, preferably some experience with at-risk youth. Some additional requirements are flexible weekly schedule, access to personal transportation, must be comfortable with camping/backpacking gear, enjoy being in a mentor/leadership role. Duties will include travelling to schools to teach an hour club, working with existing curriculum as well as developing new research-based lessons. Instructors must commit to the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year, attend one spring semester camping trip, and are highly encouraged to participate in the 2013 summer trip to places in Northern California or Montana. Ability to work independently and with confidence is a requirement of the job, as is the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
