ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR SATURDAY’S TREE PLANTING

What is expected to be the city’s largest volunteer tree planting will begin tomorrow morning, Saturday, Jan 27, at 8 am. Volunteers will assemble and begin digging holes regardless of the weather. Plans call for 2,000 volunteers to plant 20,000 trees along a 1.57-mile stretch of Will Clayton Parkway as it leads to Bush Airport.

“Volunteers are still needed, and will be welcome if they just show up,” said Gary Woods, the project’s volunteer coordinator. Unassigned volunteers should park in lot D, cross Will Clayton, and walk east to area NA1. Volunteers are asked to bring shovels and gloves. “The ground has been tilled,” Woods said, “so it will be easy to dig holes for the trees.”

All volunteers are asked to be at their sites by 8 am for instruction. The project is a joint project of the Texas Highway Department, the City of Houston, its Parks & Recreation and Aviation departments, and the nonprofit agency Trees For Houston. Snacks and lunch will be served. For more information, see the City’s website or contact Woods at (281) 474-4507 or garykwoods@sbcglobal.net.
