Description: Did you know that many plants native to the Houston area are wonderful sources of food for wildlife? Join us on October 14, 2012 to learn about the vast variety of plant, tree, and shrub species native to the Houston area and the benefits that they can bring to your yard.
Date: Sunday, October 14
Time: 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Description: Many flowering plants produce nectar that attracts thirsty hummingbirds and butterflies. Some native plants provide tasty leaves for hungry caterpillars, or seeds for ravenous birds and small mammals. Quite a few species are “living buffets†where every part: the flowers, nectar, leaves and seeds are feasted upon by all kinds of wildlife! Learn what plants to use in your yard to accomplish a variety of goals: attract wildlife, survive harsh weather conditions, and beautify your yard throughout the year. After a classroom presentation, you will tour the Arboretum’s 2 acres of landscaped grounds, including several demonstration gardens. Your tour will conclude with a preview of over 50 native species available for sale during the upcoming Fall Native Plant Sale (October 20-21). Shade trees, ornamental trees, shrubs, vines, ferns, groundcovers, grasses, wildflowers, and bog and rain garden plants will be profiled.
