Description: The March 19th meeting is a public meeting for District G to discuss the fiscal year 2012 Capital Improvement Plans (“CIPs”). Councilman Oliver Pennington, who has been a great help to our cause, will be there addressing this issue. We anticipate that Mayor Annise Parker and Dan Krueger, Director of the City’s Public Works & Engineering Department (PWE), will be in attendance.
A CIP already on the City’s books is M-261, “Buffalo Bayou Detention Basin.” A letter from PWE to a west-side neighbor clearly states the City’s intentions. See other attachments for a copy of M261 and the PWE letter. That project specifically targets the southern bank of Buffalo Bayou between Beltway 8 and Wilcrest, with excavation scheduled to begin in January of 2013. This land is part of the largest natural forested area left on public land in west Houston. It is quite significant that this $8 million project is already fully funded by the City of Houston.
Originally the City planned to construct these detention basins in another forested area, Memorial Park, but citizens in that area of town raised concerns and stopped the plan. Now we must do the same. So please SHOW UP AT THE MEETING and STAND UP FOR THE FOREST! Our opposition to the City’s plan must not waiver. Our support for the forest must not wane. Our voices must not be quieted.
You can show you support by signing an online petition which can be found at the website for Briar Forest Super Neighborhood (briarforestsn.org). A wealth of information is there about the Save Our Forest issues.
