CEC MEMBERS GIVE, GET AWARDS

The Texas Trails Network’s annual conference earlier this month presented its Texas Two Step award to volunteer Gregg Nady, Harris County Pct. 3, and the Energy Corridor District for their partnership on the West Houston Trail Network. This award recognizes partnerships. Steve Radack, Harris County Commissioner Pct. 3, received the Trail Boss award.

Bob Randall, PhD, founder of Urban Harvest, was honored with the St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities’ Community Leadership award.

“Dr. Randall’s dedication to teaching children about nutrition through gardening is beneficial in our work to combat childhood obesity,” said Patricia Gail Bray, PhD, in announcing the award. “When children grow their own vegetables, they learn about where food comes from, its nutritional content, and that it is delicious to eat. This knowledge advances their health for a lifetime.”

Randall said he will dedicate the $50,000 gift that accompanied the award toward expanding the educational, community, and school garden programs of Urban Harvest.

The Greater Houston Area chapter of the US Green Building Council recently presented its 2006 Environmental awards. Jim Brunson with Satterfield & Pontikes received the Outstanding Environmental Leader award. From the University of Houston, the team of Evan Vargas, Alejandra Perez and Veronica Hernandez won the Outstanding Student award, as well as a $500 scholarship from SpawMaxwell Company for its entry, Oil Eating Pavers.

Satterfield & Pontikes, along with Kirksey Architects, DBR Engineering, TD Industries, Walter P Moore, Admiral Glass, Glauser McNair Nursery, and CW Lighting & Associates took honors for Outstanding Environmental Team for the Satterfield & Pontikes Headquarters. The Outstanding Environmental Building Award went to Kirksey Architects for the office of Horizon Wind Energy.
