  1. The 5th Annual Houston Peace Festival. The 5th Annual Houston Peace Festival will be taking place on May 14th from 1-8pm at Live Oak Friends Meeting House (1318 W. 26th St.). The coordinators are currently looking for organizations/vendors to participate. Registration is $20 (payable at the event) and that will include a table and two chairs at the event as well as promotional materials. To reserve a table, email s.h.fielding@gmail.com. Reservations would be appreciated before May 1st.
  2. Harris County Burn Ban. Harris County enacted a burn bed because of an increased thread of wildfires. There are now 202 Texas counties with burn bans, including Harris, Chambers, Grimes, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties. To read more, visit http://www.readyharris.com.
  3. Climate Challenge Game. “Climate Challenge” is a free web-based game offered by BBC that allows players to tackle climate change as the president of the European Nations. To learn more about the game, visit http://sloanreview.mit.edu.
  4. Climate Adaptation Fund. The Climate Adaptation Fund is a program that supports projects that demonstrate effective interventions to help wildlife adapt to climate change. The purpose is to respond to potential climate change impacts and maximize long-term conservation. A total of $2 million will be made available in 2011.   5. EPA Solicits Public Comment on Permit to Reduce Stormwater Discharges from Construction Sites.   The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is releasing for public comment a draft permit that will help improve our nation’s waterways by regulating the discharge of stormwater from construction sites. Stormwater discharges during construction activities can contain sediment and pollutants that harm aquatic ecosystems, increase drinking water treatment costs and pollute waters that people use for fishing, swimming and other recreational activities.   6. EPA Seeks Applicants for Environmental Justice Green Jobs Development Pilot Projects. To support underserved populations, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 6 office in Dallas is accepting applications for a $100,000 grant for projects that promote Green Job Training and Green Job Placement.
