  1. 2011 State of the Air. Air Alliance Houston is presenting the 2011 State of the Air on Friday, February 11 from 11:30 to 1:30pm at the United Way of Houston. The keynote speaker is Dr. Al Armendariz, the Regional Administrator U.S. EPA Region 6. He will be speaking about reforming air permitting in Texas.   2. The Houston Sierra Club is coming to the Bay Area. No need to drive into Houston, now the Galveston Bay Area will have Sierra Club meetings and environmental projects close to home. To find out more attend the first Meeting of the Galveston Bay Area group of the Houston Sierra Club on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, 6:30 pm- Social; 7:00 pm – 8:30. Location Clear Lake Park, Bay Area Community Center (blue roof), 5002 NASA Road 1 (across the street from the lake), Seabrook 77586. Topics will include a discussion of organization information, a presentation about the Texas Bottle Bill by Patsy Gillham of Plastic Pollution Texas,  and information from Scott Jones about activities of the Galveston Bay Foundation.   3. Friends of Texas Wildlife Introductory Course. Friends of Texas Wildlife will hold a 2-hour introductory class on February 19th from 10am until noon at the Lone Star College.   1. Houston’s First Organic Landscape and Gardening Fair. The Organic Landscape and Gardening Fair, hosted by Organic Horticulture Business Alliance (OHBA) and Urban Harvest, will take place on February 19th from 8am-4pm at the United Way, 50 Waugh Drive. There will be plenty of speakers and workshops centered around organic products and practices. Tickets are $55 and include refreshments and an organic lunch.   2. Transition Houston Training. Transition Houston will be holding a training for the Transition movement on February 19th and 20th at the Houston Mennonite Church. The Transition movement is a Permaculture-based and community-focused global effort to address the challenges of peak oil, climate change, and economic disruption.   3. Birding on the Upper Texas Coast. Rice will be offering a Birding on the Upper Texas Coast Class that will meet for six consecutive Wednesdays, starting March 23. There will be two sections, one that meets from 1:30-3pm and one that meets 7-8:30pm. In this introduction to birding, participants will learn the skills needed to identify birds as well as the types of birds that can be seen in various areas of the upper Texas Gulf Coast.   4. Nature of Things Lecture Series. The Heartwood Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist is offering this lecture series on the first Wednesday of each month – 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at W.G.   5. Run for a Reason. Thanks to all those inspiration station volunteers who cheered the 22,000 Marathon runners on January 30. The Buffalo Bayou Partnership inspiration station at mile marker 24 was a lively area – lots of jumping, cheering, high fives, and handing out beverages to weary and drenched runners. Special thanks to everyone who participated and donated to BBP’s Run for a Reason program.
