Coastal Prairie Conservancy seeks Stewardship Manager

Location: Indiangrass Preserve, Waller TX

Position Description
Since 1992, the Coastal Prairie Conservancy (CPC) has been working to protect the prairie for people and
wildlife. We are a nationally accredited 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Houston, Texas, and a
trusted leader in local land conservation. CPC protects over 33,000 acres across a 9-county region, and
owns over 13,000 acres in Waller and Harris Counties. These lands are part of historic Katy Prairie, a
prairie wetland complex supporting a large population of migratory birds and other wildlife that also
supports cattle and farming. The Stewardship Manager will have responsibility of the day-to-day
management of CPC’s rangelands, farmlands, and natural areas, and will:

  • Work with Stewardship and Outreach Director to manage CPC-owned properties in accordance
    with budget and natural resource values.
  • Identify land stewardship needs, priorities, and costs for responsible stewardship.
  • Oversee land management projects, including grassland restoration, invasive species control,
    infrastructure maintenance.
  • Apply for and manage conservation cost-share programs for funding, including programs funded
    by federal, state, and private sources.
  • Work with Stewardship and Outreach Director to develop budgets, track expenses, and ensure
    grant-funded expenses are submitted timely.
  • Negotiate and oversee hunting, farming, and cattle grazing leases and oversee sustainable
    agricultural uses of Katy Prairie preserves.
    QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in rangeland ecology, agricultural or natural resources management, biology,
    environmental studies, or related field of study.
  • Understanding of natural coastal prairie ecosystem, including familiarity with prairie/wetland
    ecology, restoration practices, regional flora and fauna, and local invasive plant species, or
    willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with United States Department of Agriculture programs administered by the Farms
    Services Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and financial reporting or willingness to learn.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with the public both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience with spatial mapping applications (GIS, Google Earth, Landscape, etc) and common
    Office software applications (Word, Excel) and willingness to learn other software.
    LOCATION & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • In person on the Katy Prairie, Texas.
  • Willing to work in physically demanding conditions in all weather conditions to perform essential
    job duties.
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required.
    COMPENSATION
  • Salary commensurate with experience; range $50,000 – $70,000.
  • Health Insurance, Retirement Plan Contribution, paid vacation, and CPC holidays.
  • As an exempt, salaried employee, no eligibility for overtime.
