The Woodlands Township seeks Environmental Education Coordinator- Recycling and Waste Minimization
Summary of Duties: This position develops, promotes, and implements environmental education programs to the residents, schools, community organizations and Village Associations of The Woodlands Township. This position is the primary resource for communicating and sustaining the Township’s integrated solid waste management plan, including targeting sources of recycling contamination and identifying opportunities to increase waste diversion. This position is responsible for the planning and development of special events and outreach programs, including not limited to: GreenUp Community Clean-up, Earth Day Celebration, 3R Drive Thru, Recycle Right Cart Tagging Program, and Adopt-a-Path. This position plays a lead role in creating, coordinating, and disseminating department communications in collaboration with the Township Communications Department.

Salary Range: $23.37 – $26.47 Hourly
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and administer waste minimization and recycling programs for residents and facilities of The Woodlands Township. Provide support for waste minimization and recycling programs in commercial, school-based, faith-based, and recreational settings.
- Provide expertise for other Township departments, community organizations, residents, local governmental entities, and businesses to develop and enhance public support for programs on solid waste, recycling, household hazardous waste, less toxic alternatives, composting, and other environmental and public health concerns.
- Play a lead role in coordinating the Environmental Services Department’s Recycle Right Campaign, including the Recycling Cart Tagging program. Train and oversee two seasonal staff and direct their daily activities for three months at a time.
- Assist the Environmental Services Manager in administering the Township’s contract for solid waste services; play a lead role in communicating aspects of the contract to internal and external audiences.
- Provide excellent customer service in support of the Township’s solid waste services contract as well as range of local sustainability- and conservation-related topics.
- Develop and implement special events and programs including, but not limited to GreenUp Community Clean Up, Earth Day Celebration, 3R Recycling Drive Thru, and Plastic Film Recycling Outreach.
- Assist in coordination and outreach for Department special events such as Arbor Day Tree Giveaway, Community Tree Planting, Woodlands Landscaping Solutions, and Sunset Cinema. Lead and participate in Zero Waste logistics for Community Races.
- Create and deliver recycling and waste minimization education activities for a wide range of audience types. Staff educational booths at outreach events on a range of department topics. Develop and deliver presentations in person and online.
- Bring forward effective, innovative messaging strategies. Design and disseminate outreach materials – magazine articles, blogs, press releases, social media posts, mailers, web pages, advertisements, and more – on a wide range of environmental- and sustainability-related topics.
- Play a lead role in coordinating the Environmental Services Department’s communications: develop and manage calendars; collaborate with the Township Communications Department on project requests, Department webpages, and online event calendar.
- Recruit, train, coordinate and cultivate volunteers including individuals, youth groups and community organizations to broaden educational outreach and community involvement projects.
- Network with governmental and environmental organizations at the local, regional, and national level.
- Research grant and outside funding sources to enhance programming resources.
- Solicit bids and negotiate agreements with vendors.
- Assist Environmental Services Manager in budget development and monthly and quarterly reporting. Assist with budget preparation, monitoring of expenses, and preparation of purchase orders.
- Meet and maintain the requirements of the driver safety policy.
- Employee is required to work certain special events on nights, weekends, or holidays.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees. Supervise volunteers in office, in the field and at special events.
Qualifications
Knowledge of: Educational and informative presentation techniques for a variety of audiences. Broad range of environmental topics and issues including conservation practices, native plants, local wildlife, and sustainable landscaping practices. Understanding of effective messaging strategies and techniques.
Ability to: Develop impactful, innovative educational programs.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university.
Experience: Three (3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Have the ability to develop creative, innovative educational programs and campaigns. Have knowledge of educational and informative presentation techniques for a wide variety of audiences. Have knowledge and understanding of a broad range of environmental concerns and issues including recycling and waste minimization, water conservation, and integrated pest management. Knowledge of conservation practices, native plants, local wildlife and ecology.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Must possess a Texas driver’s license within the first ninety (90) days of employment and meet the driver safety policy requirements.
- Certification through the Solid Waste Association of North America or Keep Texas Beautiful is a plus.
Computer Skills: Proficient in MS Office; additional expertise in ArcGIS, MailChimp, Wufoo, and Canva preferred.

While working events, employee may be required to stand for long periods of time.
Occassional exposure to unpleasant environmental condition and/or hazards. Often work outside under moderate physical effort.
Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
