Harris County Precinct 3 seeks Outdoor Educator

Position Description

Outdoor Educators professionally plan and implement recreation and interpretive offerings to the public under the Harris County Precinct 3 Parks department. Working under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the successful candidate must be detail oriented and possess a “can do attitude”. They must have good communication skills, and the ability to work closely with staff, volunteers, and park visitors. In carrying out daily work assignments, supervision may be exercised over various work crews, volunteers, staff, and visitors of all ages. The applicant should be highly self-motivated, excited to work outdoors, not afraid to get their hands dirty, and able to accomplish a variety of tasks in a normal day.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and host a variety of outdoor recreation and interpretive programs directly related Precinct 3 Parks and Greenway projects.
  • Adapt effectively to a variety of situations, personalities, and available resources
  • Alert to public safety and work hazards at all times
  • Answer correspondence and questions from the public related to programs and facilities
  • Collect, report, and maintain records related to programs and facilities
  • Assist in supply and equipment inventories
  • Conduct advance planning of work itineraries, transportation, and logistics
  • Develop promotional and new interpretive materials
  • Inform the public on park rules and regulations
  • Interact productively with staff, interns, volunteers, and other departments
  • Maintain quality and professional appearance of all work areas, equipment, vehicles, and county property
  • Plan and help execute special events, festivals, and projects at various Precinct 3 parks held each year
  • Willing to obtain and maintain job-specific certifications within 1 year after hire date (NASP, Angler Ed., NAI, First Aid/CPR, YPT, ACA Trip Lead)
  • Must work varying shifts including weekends and evenings, these include 3-5 nights and 2-3 Saturdays per month

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • A two-year Associates’ degree in environmental science/biology/parks and recreation/nature related degree

OR

  • Two years minimum work experience in a similar position or field of work.
