  1. METRO Accepts Award for Best Transit Agency in North America (Houston Style Magazine, 10/9/2015)
“The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) today received the 2015 ‘Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award’ from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). The award was given to METRO at APTA’s annual meeting in San Francisco. The national organization bestows the award annually to transit agencies in three categories. METRO competed and won in the category for largest transit agencies, those providing 20 million or more passenger trips annually. The award acknowledges transit accomplishments over the past three years. METRO was judged on safety, operations and maintenance, customer service, financial management, sustainability, workforce development, attendance and employee costs, minority and women advancement, marketing, policy administration, and community relations. METRO was also judged on quantitative measures including riders per hour and total passenger miles.”

  2. Bike across Houston: City’s B-cycle set to become largest bike sharing program in the Southwest (Elizabeth Rhodes – CultureMap Houston, 10/6/2015)
“After enjoying three years of success, the city’s bike sharing program — Houston B-Cycle — is getting a big boost from the federal government, one that will enable the program to become the largest bike share program in Texas and the southwest. B-Cycle was recently approved by the Houston-Galveston Area Council Transportation Policy Council for $3.48 million from the Transportation Improvement Program to expand the city’s bike sharing program. The funds will allow Houston B-Cycle to triple in size over the next 18 to 24 months, expanding from 29 stations and 210 bikes to 100 stations and nearly 800 bikes. ”

  3. New development to claim Montrose garden (Nancy Sarnoff – Houston Chronicle, 10/5/2015)
“A lush community garden is giving way to new development in east Montrose, dismaying the homegrown horticulturists who’ve leased small plots there since 2012 to tend fruit trees, grow seasonal vegetables and otherwise reap joy from a rare patch of green in the middle of their urban neighborhood. The city of Houston put the 8,400 square-foot parcel in the Audubon Place historic district under contract earlier this year with the intention of keeping it a garden. But officials backed out just before the three-month option period ended, the seller’s real estate broker says. Now, a builder has signed an agreement to buy the property known as Greenleaf Gardens and put two “Prairie-style” homes on the site.”
