ECONOTES 2013-11-12: Environmental Headlines for the Houston Region

  1. Prop 6 coalition splits on path forward (Matthew Tresaugue – Houston Chronicle, 11/7/2013)
The ambitious plan to tap Texas’ savings account to address the state’s water needs brought together unlikely allies: environmentalists and chemical makers, farmers and builders, Republican Gov. Rick Perry and Democratic lawmakers. On the day after the passage of Proposition 6, the successful coalition began splintering over which projects should be at the front of the line for funding. The immediate task before the three-member board is to look at which projects to assist through the voter-approved fund, which will be seeded with $2 billion from already collected taxes on oil and gas production.

  2. Reef aims to restore oyster population (Matthew Tresaugue – Houston Chronicle, 11/6/2013)
Just after dawn the heavy lifting begins on a project to build something that has not been seen for decades in the deep murk of Matagorda Bay: a vast, thriving reef of oysters, the linchpin of a now-comatose ecosystem. The federally funded project represents one of the most ambitious efforts to restore beleaguered oyster reefs in Texas. The Nature Conservancy says its work to rebuild the long-lost Half Moon Reef, about 100 miles southwest of Houston, will provide benefits far beyond a half-shell oyster bar when finished next month.

  3. Recycles Fest collects recyclable items by the carload (The Examiner, 11/5/2013)
Area citizens turned out by the hundreds for the 5th Bellaire Recycles Fest hosted by the Bellaire Environmental & Sustainability Board. Held in conjunction with America Recycles Day and Texas Recycles Day, the event raises awareness and educates citizens on the economic, social, and environmental benefits of reducing and recycling waste. A steady stream of more than 300 vehicles used the drive-through drop-off at Condit Elementary School.
