Fortunately, technology can make catching wildlife simple, safe, and fun while providing us with new ways of understanding our wild neighbors. Participants will learn how to ‘catch’ wildlife using game cameras, footprint traps, audio recorders, and even smart phones. Don’t worry – attendees can try catching wildlife with good ole nets as well. http://www.katyprairie.org/Summersciencenights.html.
  5. My Houston 2040 Monthly Happy Hour. Houston Tomorrow, Air Alliance Houston, and the Citizens’ Transportation Coalition agree that Houstonians can build a better Houston today by thinking about the Houston we may inherit in 2040 and the Houston we want in 2040. Each happy hour will include time for networking and socializing, a topical speaker who will give an informational presentation on Houston urbanism, transportation planning, culture, environment, and more, and a visionary speaker who will give their “My Houston 2040″ talk. Happy Hour takes place the second Thursday of every month at Rudyard’s Pub. The next event will happen on July 11, 2013 from 5-7pm. More at https://www.facebook.com/MyHouston2040.

  9. News & Walk from Houston Parks Board. Houston’s City Council unanimously passed a historic agreement yesterday that sets the stage for Bayou Greenways 2020 to be built. Read more here. The Houston Parks Board and everyone else working on this connected system of parks and trails could not do it without your support. And yesterday, we were proud to have so many supporters come down to City Hall and watch this vote take place.
But while we celebrate for a moment, our work is already moving and we’re deep in the trenches on multiple projects. On July 20, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., we’re hosting a walking tour of one of these projects along White Oak Bayou. Come join us on the bayous and hear about one of the projects that will be moving forward this year. RSVP here.

  1. Transforming Houston’s Concrete Bayous Into 160-Mile Greenspace (Laurie Johnson – KUHF News, 6/26/2013)
A $205 million dollar makeover of Houston’s bayous is about to start thanks to an agreement between the City of Houston and the nonprofit Houston Parks Board. 2. Seafood consumption advisory on spotted sea trout removed for most of Galveston Bay (The Bay Area Citizen, 7/1/2013)
The Galveston Bay Foundation (“GBF”) celebrates the removal of the seafood consumption advisory on spotted sea trout (speckled trout) for most of the Galveston Bay system, including a portion of Upper Galveston Bay and all of Trinity, Lower Galveston, East, West, Chocolate, Drum, Bastrop, and Christmas bays. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, testing of the speckled trout samples indicated that concentrations of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), both of which are groups of toxic compounds, had decreased to acceptable levels and no longer pose a significant health risk. This latest testing is a snapshot in time and there is still much work to be done to further reduce risks from the consumption of seafood in areas of the bay system, most notably the upper portion of Upper Galveston Bay, the Houston Ship Channel, and the San Jacinto River.
