The Wildlife Center of Texas has been busy, taking in about 400 squirrels since the beginning of September. Mother squirrels seem to be abandoning their babies, a sign of stress. This stress is likely due to a number of factors including the human development, drought, and the loss of trees suitable to hold nests.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing a new way to survey Texas Whooping Cranes, replacing a frequent count with science-based estimates that federal biologists say provide a more realistic view of the endangered population. The count surveys the last migrating flock in the wild, which returns each winter to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, 170 miles southwest of Houston.
