The Bastrop County wildfires ravaged the countryside one year ago this month. Hundreds of acres of beautiful pines and nearly 2000 homes were destroyed. At the same time, wildfires were also ravaging areas surrounding Austin and throughout Texas. More of these fires are expected to accompany the projected heat and drought conditions of the future.
Post-fire analysis appears to indicate that homesteads where fire-prevention methods were employed fared much better than more conventional homesteads. During this month’s presentation you will learn about practices you can implement to help protect your home from wildfires. Guest presenter Kay Mayfield is not only a Texas Forest Service employee and seasoned volunteer fire fighter, but she built and lives in a straw bale home. She was trained by wildland-urban interface specialists in wildfire preparedness. Kay will address general fire preparedness as well as the unique aspects of natural building.
